Charlton Athletic v Peterborough Sam Purkiss

At The Valley today and saw the officiating of Sam Purkiss who
is, I believe, a fellow alumnus of my University and who works
in the legal profession. Purkiss is of very slight build and
doesn't possess a lot of obviously observable authority in his
demeanour but this afternoon he put in a very decent display.
His chief attribute appears to be calmness and he maintained an
unobtrusive control by being fit, well positioned, getting most
of his foul calls right, working well with ARs and diffusing any
possible flashpoints with good player communication. His three
yellow cards were all fairly awarded and I was pleased to note
one of them was for obvious time wasting by the Peterborough GK
who had already been warned to hurry up and one for a piece of
dissent shown after the final whistle when it is all too common
for some referees to ignore what happens immediately after the
match has concluded.
This wasn't the hardest or most challenging game to referee but
Sam Purkiss delivered a safe performance. I don't really see him
challenging the likes of Rebecca Welch or Sam Allison for
destined promotion but I imaging he is a solid member of his
present cohort.

So this is a pretty good blueprint for a successful referee:
~ Calmness;
~ Fitness:
~ Good positioning;
~ Getting decisions right;
~ Good teamwork with Assistant Referees;
~ Good player communication.
Forgive me if this looks like old news - its pretty much what
"old school" referee instructors taught referee candidates in
years gone by.
I do not remember being taught to "manage the game", to ignore
abuse, or to "keep 22 players on the field"; maybe that is where
I went wrong!

Years ago I was a 4th official in a Central Midlands League Cup
final. That describes Sam perfectly very laid back, calm and
considered. He was an AR on that final and was always destined
to go on bigger and better games.

Very interesting. Thinking back on his performance yesterday I
would say this. Purkiss makes refereeing look a fairly simple
and straightforward activity. In truth, it wasn't a very
challenging match to referee but I still think it's high praise
to make things look simple when there are other referees who
continually seem to create difficulties for themselves and
others who always seem to let their ego get in the way of
no-fuss officiating.

I recall a match in the Isthmian League way back when he
abandoned the match having sent off his fifth home player and
unusually no blame whatsoever was attached to him by anyone.
Give me him over Fireman Sam anytime.

Depends if you want fires putting out I suppose but for good,
clear, accuracy go to the legal profession every time
