Robert Jones: Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa (FA)

I think the general feeling so far is that officials look far
more comfortable minus VAR. Jones is an exemption to this. In
the nicest way possible he's been off it completely. It's like
he's flipping a coin for half of his decisions. He looks unsure
at everything and then when he makes up his mind, he stands by
it by shouting and not effectively communicating.

I have to say this is probably one of the weakest performances
I’ve seen from Jones in a while.
I have to agree with the OP re the inconsistent approach to
calling a foul, and some of the cards brandished were random in
some way shape or form.
VAR may have come in for the penalty appeal he turned down as
well.
I wouldn’t say Jones has gone off the boil but a few decisions
recently have caused some concerns on RTR.

Typical Mr Jones performance. Very poor foul detection. Clear
penalty missed for Villa and he had a clear and unobstructed
view. At least he is consistent 😱

Slightly off topic, but I muted the commentary after the first
half.
The commentary was completely unpalatable, and paying a BBC
licence fee to listen to the rubbish that was portrayed from the
commentators is unacceptable.

Wasn’t he another one who’s progression seemed predetermined
from an early stage and was destined for the P.L. almost
regardless?

Not the best performance from Mr Jones tonight, i think that
Boly sending off for two yellows a few weeks ago has dented his
confidence somewhat.
My reasoning for stating it was not his best performance are
perfectly well explained in this thread by TTFL

I thought he was OK, nothing more, but then the game had
precious little to offer and Mr Jones could only referee what
was put in front of him. Like an earlier poster, I cringed at
some of the garbage from the commentators, in particular going
on about a 'stonewall penalty' which Rob apparently failed to
award to Villa. In my view, it was nothing of the sort, and not
even a penalty.

I personally don't think it was a penalty on the shout villa had
as there was minimal contact and if there had been VAR then they
definitely wouldn't have intervened. On a side note, it was so
much more enjoyable to watch with no interuptions for VAR every
5 seconds which meant the game flowed better. I also don't think
that Rob Jones had his best game as he was very inconsistent
with his foul detection but all of the yellows he gave were
correct in my view.

Missed a clear penalty that would have been given by VAR.

I’ve only watched on the TV so forgive me if I’ve missed
something but that’s not enough for a penalty kick these days.
Given how much people moan when “soft” ones are awarded I’m
surprised that people would expect that to be given tonight.
Contact created by Moreno pulling his leg back into the defender
who didn’t even make a challenge!
Some very biased commentary which certainly influences people’s
opinions. But everything looked good. No major controversy,
yellows all correct and some nice advantages too. Not a lot to
complain about at all!
