Clearly if a fuller contact had been made on the Palace player’s
leg then this wouldn’t be a discussion. However, the contact
here was only minor so it’s a harder sell. I think it’s more
reckless than dangerous/SFP, and for me isn’t a 100% nailed on
clear and obvious mistake. Unnecessary intervention by VAR
I’m taken back to the Havertz non-red at Newcastle (and Udogie
v Chelsea) earlier this season which has some similarities to
this (leading with studs, some degree of force, off the ground -
although those were clearly worse than this tackle!) …and don’t
forget PGMOL/Webb deemed that to be an error. I bet this type of
tackle was reviewed at one of their training meetings therefore
not overly surprised they intervened here, even though I
disagree.

Did a Hull player not get a red card overturned from a similar
challenge made on Monday yes I know there is no VAR in
championship and I guess Everton can’t get DCL’s overturned as
it was given by VAR but aren’t they the same

If the leg was planted and it was a direct contact into the body
of the shin then I could accept a red card.
However that challenge was simply mistimed with a genuine
attempt to play the ball, and merely brushed the leg.
If that’s the threshold of what VAR will come in for now for SFP
then I expect a record number of red cards from now on.

There's no doubt he caught him with studs very high up his shin.
I suspect VAR asked Kavanagh if he had seen it and he either
said no or he thought there was no contact, at that point it
would start to tick the box for clear and obvious as the
on-pitch referee didn't see it. These days if you challenge
with your studs 10" in the air and you make any kind of contact
you run the risk of being in big trouble. This is the problem
with C&O though, one person's C&O will be different to another's
as football is a subjective game.

For me this one comes down to how VAR is being used. Could a red
card on the field be supported based on the replay - yes IMO,
the studs are showing, it is high and there is contact. The fact
the leg isn't planted is more a matter of luck than how
Calvert-Lewin challenged for the ball. However, a non-red card
could also be supported. I don't think Calvert-Lewin was out of
control, contact was minimal and there wasn't excessive force.
In these instances I really do wonder why VAR has got involved
here.
For me this is a really clear example of whatever the on-field
decision made being supportable so I really don't understand why
there was a need to intervene and overturn the decision. I
certainly don't think this is a case of a "clear and obvious
error".

An extremely good performance by team ref tonight spoilt by an
unnecessary var intervention and they wore traditional colours,
well just about apart from the white top of the leg garments.
To me re-refereeing the game, not sure many in the ground
thought it was a sending off offence.
Good mental strength by Kavanagh not to let the var intervention
affect his performance afterwards.
Wouldnt be surprised if the red card is overturned.
As for sticking by his original decision, i fear whether right
or wrong it would, incorrectly in my view, be frowned upon by
the peers that be.
The admin staff at the FA are going to get very busy if that is
the standard for a red card to be issued.

The Hull one was rescinded. The Calvert Lewin one most likely
will be as well, they can overturn them if given by VAR. The
Soucek one given by Mike Dean after OFR was rightly rescinded
after.

Rather than rambling on how the game has gone or whatever, the
actual conclusion from the (generally quite harsh) red card is
this - the point isn't the nature of the contact, which with a
stretched leg and studs on the calf contact is certainly on the
borderline to SFP, but the question to ask is why has the
contact occured: it is because Clyne plants his leg rather
unexpectedly into the ground, where Calvert-Lewin can't really
expect him to. As one previous poster mentioned, there is no
comparison between this foul on Udogie's vs. Chelsea (or Havertz
vs. Newcastle), but because modern refereeing only takes into
account the 'studs-above-ankle' factor, it is the incident from
tonight which ends up as the RC.
For Calvert-Lewin, a YC for reckless would be the best decision,
imo.
