He should have been moving to get into a clear position to see
it. AR could have helped too. Also an absolutely awful challenge
from dunk went unpunished in he build up to spurs’s 1st goal.
Again Gillett in a poor position to see

I totally agree. But it’s creating a problem that shouldn’t be
there. Arsenal fans the other week were in uproar he had been
appointed to their game considering his Liverpool connections.
Tonight Spurs fans may say the same. Next time he may make
wrong calls and then there really will be scrutiny. Same as
Oliver with Newcastle, why he gets to officiate rivals is beyond
me, it’s creating a talking point that shouldn’t be.

Your suggestion seems completely unworkable on many levels.
Are you really suggesting that Oliver/Gillett/Rob Jones should
be ruled out of refereeing the top teams midway through the
season? (For what it's worth I don't think that Liverpool and
Spurs are really competing in the same place in the league but
that's obviously a subjective opinion.) I could perhaps
understand a more cautious approach if we were in May but it
would seem very odd to rule out some of your best officials from
doing the best teams for most of the season.
What would you do with any referee who supported a team around
10th/11th at this stage of the season? Do you rule them out of
the top half teams because they might push for Europe or the
bottom teams because they might get drawn into relegation?

Here's an idea. Why don't we just believe that the referees are
unbiased and would not seek to make any decision which might or
might not benefit a team they support ? Then if some Club is
desperate enough to mutter otherwise then they should be
politely ignored.

was an awful tackle which should have been sanctioned as a red

Good VAR review for the penalty awarded, hard to see on the
pitch but clear shirt pull. Too much cover and doubt for DOGSO.
However, looks like Dunk should probably had had a red card

team lost tonight and would rather blame the referees rather his
own teams shortcomings.

No, you're creating a problem that doesn't exist.
In the split second needed to make decisions, do you think
referees (particularly those at the top level) think, "Hold on,
how will this affect the team I 'support'?"
And let's have it right, Jarred Gillett is from Australia, not
Toxteth!!

Given that Newcastle are currently 9th and as many points away
from Everton in 17th as Liverpool in 1st, that’d be an awful lot
of teams to rule Oliver out of officiating. He’d have a very
quiet second half of the season.
If Newcastle can improve and move back up the table, I’d have no
qualms about Mr Gillett turning up to referee a game vs Arsenal
or Man City. He’s a professional referee and would surely be
considering his own role and career ahead of how a result
between two other teams may affect the team he supports.
Likewise, I can’t see any reasonable justification for other
teams to worry about Oliver refereeing them just because he’s a
Newcastle fan. I guess it would be open to any referee to
withdraw from a game they aren’t comfortable with.
