I think it’s wrong to penalise a player for impeding an opponent
when they are only in that position due to that players team
mate impeding them and then Burnley got a free kick a minute
later for a push in the back

Two shockers from Paul Tierney and Simon Hooper on VAR. the
first goal disallowed in the first half against Nunez was poor.
It’s unfortunate that Hooper doesn’t do his job and show the
push on Salah for the second goal.

Even if I am a Liverpool fan, I get completely baffled to see a
refereeing blog talking about a push before the offside. It
doesn't matter how Salah happened to end up in an offside
position unless it was a foul, and I think we can all agree that
there was nothing in there that justified a penalty being given.
There is no justification in the LOTG not to give an offside in
this situation, no matter how harsh you feel the rule might be

Sorry Elliot, I must strongly disagree.
In the aftermath of Tottenham v Liverpool, all the talking heads
of the PGMOL and Howard Webb were all over the press saying
(verbatim) "Well, once the game restarts, the laws of the game
dictate we cannot stop the game for a VAR error."
Which everyone accepts, not necessarily graciously, or
repugnantly but it's accepted.
Law 12 Section 1.

So, if we establish the following
- Was there a push? Yes
- Was an offence punishable by a direct free kick committed? Yes
- Was an offence punishable by a direct free kick committed
within the penalty area? Yes
Now, the problem here is. We've identified a penalty situation
where the criteria have been met. Usually, the goal would have
negated the penalty, everyone accepts that which is totally
fair. However, in the sequence of events (Push/Offside/Goal) the
penalty should have been awarded.
Now, my final point is, we've got to follow the laws of the
game. It was said so enthusiastically after the Spurs offside
fiasco, but yet it's so willfully not followed. Almost like that
argument is as much poo as it is substance.

At least you argue for the penalty, and not for applying the
offside law in a way that has no justification in said law. From
the other comments on this I get the feeling they want a goal to
be awarded, which is not possible as an offside offence has been
committed

I think it was a foul that caused Salah to be there, if what
Tierney saw was what I saw when the VAR border was on the
screen, he was never shown the push.
Whether you can say penalty, then play the advantage and give
the goal that is more technical than I can follow, but for
Burnley to get a free kick is just not correct.
No blame at all on Tierney, unless he should have asked for a
side on of the build up to the offside but why would he if he's
oblivious to the push.

First decision- from what I have seen it’s a ridiculously soft
foul to disallow the first goal- no one appealed and far more
contact was allowed at times in the game at times and at others
far less was penalised. Can see why VAR perhaps didn’t get
involved if there was contact.
Second decision- the offside, honestly I don’t know. Yes he is
offside and probably impacting but he is pushed? Just like the
Newcastle and Palace one last season, surely the attacker can’t
be penalised for being pushed?
The worst decision for me is the advantage he played after a
foul on a Liverpool player in their own half. He played
advantage and the next pass was intercepted by a Burnley player
who then had a free shot at the keeper. At the point if the
interception Tierney clearly still had his hand up to play
advantage. He then put it down and allows the shot. If that went
in there would be huge huge controversy, he is very lucky the
shot was missed, otherwise it’s City vs Spurs again but worse.
Wonder what VAR would have done if anything? Probably claimed
they couldn’t intervene because the ref saw the foul and it
wasn’t a clear error or some nonsense like that.
Glad we have Taylor on New Years Day after Tierney, Hooper and
Coote this week.

Offside is binary, you are on or off, it doesn't matter how you
end up in that position. The exception is if it is a push that
puts you in that position, and it is deemed to worthy of a foul.
Can't see many referees giving a penalty for that, and
certainly nowhere near enough for VAR to get involved.
What the AR, and subsequently VAR, absolutely can't do is not
penalise the offside on the basis he was pushed offside.
