Breakspear kicking 2024 off with two red cards this afternoon.
That high boot looked nasty.

A somewhat inconsistent performance from Peter Wright at Crewe
Alex v Bradford City this afternoon. Quite lenient in the first
half and I was very surprised that a yellow card was not issued
for the foul which led to Crewe's match-winning penalty. He
tightened up a bit in the second half, but was inconsistent in
his use of yellow cards, and some of his foul detection seemed
to be random. One or two good advantages but spoilt it by
bringing play back for a free kick when Crewe were quite clearly
building up a meaningful attack. AR1 - Christopher Husband I
believe - was very enthusiastic with his flag, and Crewe had
cause to be grateful when a late Bradford equaliser was ruled
out for offside. All-in-all, I don't think the Bradford fans and
players / management will want to see Peter again in a hurry and
the Crewe manager was clearly not too pleased with him either.
Not a game for the purist but Crewe dug out a 1-0 win c/o the
early penalty and it's points that count as Crewe resume their
hunt for promotion.

Despite the usual ref berating from Steve Evans I thought
Breakspear had a really good game. A stickler for restarts being
taken from the right place, hot on the Pompey timewasting,
didn't give a penalty for a block on Sean Raggett as no movement
towards the ball to block and obviously correct call to send
Thompson for the high boot.
Really disappointed with how Evans spoke about him post-match
'well that's Breakspear for you etc' - comments I hope he's
fined for and reminded of the example it sets. The only thing I
agree with him on was the failure to give Pack a SYC, other than
that a really solid game that he had control of throughout.

Good day in the office for Sam and team yesterday, no key
incidents but can’t remember him getting much wrong. There was
one incident where Taylor went down as though he’d been pulled
over but good decision to play on and not fall for the attempt.
Gills were insistent there was a handball in the box in the
first half but Sam was spared making a decision by an offside.
My only gripe was the Gills keeper taking 20-30 seconds several
times when holding the ball to kick it away, but we probably see
that punished once a season across the hundreds of games in the
EFL, so can’t criticise Sam directly. I really hope that’s a
“point of emphasis” for next season.

The last time Ollie Yates was at Prenton Park, he performed
well, yesterday a bit more inconsistent. He spotted a few fouls
with minimal contact, but seemed to miss some stronger
transgressions. Brought the ball back for a free-kick when an
advantage didn't accrue on one occasion, similar situation and
he let play continue. The two penalties for Rovers both appeared
correct calls, arguably the Notts County keeper moved before the
ball was struck in saving the first.
Rovers manager Nigel Adkins was booked and then later on in the
game showed a straight red by Mr Yates. Unclear what led to the
first booking, the red came after the referee hadn't given a
Rovers free-kick when Charlie Jolley was blocked off. It looked
like a foul, can only guess that the language used in the
protestations resulted in a red rather than second yellow for
the Rovers boss.

Saw Ed Duckworth (on ifollow) have Grimsby v Walsall on New
Years Day and have to say can only praise him.
Only 2 KMIs of note, turning down Grimsby appeals for a penalty
when it appeared to me that the forward tried to initiate
contact and the only fault I would have with Ed from the whole
game was the failure to YC that forward for simulation.
Literally less than a minute later he gave a Walsall penalty for
a trip, which looked the right call to me and if player
reactions are any guide, there didn't appear to be any
complaints from the Grimsby players on either of those
decisions. You could tell at the end of the game when the
manager walked on to shake the referee and assistant's hands he
was asking about them by where he was pointing on the
pitch...although even he didn't seem that convinced himself and
was more a conversation with the referee rather than ranting and
raving at him.
Only one yellow card, for a cynical pull back by a Walsall
player after a midfielder had burst past him in the centre
circle so 100% correct with nothing else remotely worthy of a
YC.
Fitness and positioning was good all game, emphasised in injury
time by a Walsall break from near their own goal line, resulting
in a goal at the other end which Ed was bang up with play for.
I thought I'd post as there was a little debate/surprise on the
3rd Round FA Cup appointment thread that Ed has a game as it was
one of the better performances I've seen from a newer member of
the EFL list in the last season or two.

Thanks for posting. David Artell in conversation rather than
ranting and raving? Well that's a new one on me, but good to
hear, particularly as Grimsby lost 6-1.
