Yes he’s definitely better as on field official, seems calmer
and more comfortable. No way was that an appalling tackle from
Bissouma though. If you’ve played football that is no more than
a gash on the knee, it’s an obvious yellow card. There is no
extra force, it’s more like an in-out challenge that happens all
the time. He should have stuck with his on field guns, where he
spotted it and saw exactly why it was a yellow! Oliver with a
strange intervention to say the least…

1. Bissouma made connection with the knee, not foot on foot like
Mac Allisters was
2. His job isn't to be friends with the spurs players. It could
have been a second yellow but wasn't a howler to not give it.

Late foul followed by a knee to the head from Yates? Where was

Correct decision from Oliver to recommend a review for the
appalling Bissouma challenge.
Correct decision by var to rule out the forest goal for offside,
the assistant unfortunately got caught out of position.
Overall a decent showing again by Gillett, but he ought to be
picking out that Bissouma challenge as a red on field, it is
amazing how many referees dont though.
Well deserved win for Spurs.

Perfect example of on field referees being damned if they do and
damned if they don’t , personally I like ( I may not agree with
it though ) that refereees seem to produce a YC instead of a red
card , it looks less embarrassing because VAR can recommend a
OFR compared to producing a RC and VAR saying it should be a YC
Maybe referees produce the YC and say can you check please as I
think it’s a potential RC but I’m erring on the side of caution

As happens in rugby, "on field decision is...." unless you have
angles that show it different (oh but then all of that is
communicates to the TV audience too)

I don't agree with this really. I want the referee to make what
they consider the best decision in real time - especially as VAR
can't always be relied on to correct things! As discussed
elsewhere, I'm really not a fan of rugby's new approach of 'I'll
go yellow and they can upgrade if necessary'. I think it
undermines the referee's authority and can make them look a bit
weak.
Presuming the authorities agree with the red card, I think
Gillett would be marked down for showing yellow initially?

Every single time they go with the VAR overturn without fail, a

I believe we had the judgements of the 'Independent Panel' which
assesses KMI decisions for matches up until the end of November.
They judged that there were 13 decisions VAR should have
intervened on but didn't and only 2 that they intervened on but
shouldn't have. This suggests that the biggest problem with VAR
in PL is by far VARs not getting involved when they should as
opposed to making incorrect referrals to the screen.
There's only been one instance this season of the on-field
referee sticking with their decision at the monitor, Aston Villa
V Crystal Palace. I believe this was judged to be a correct VAR
intervention but an incorrect decision by the referee in
rejecting the advice.
Whilst I agree referees should always have the option of
sticking with their original decision, you can understand from
the above why they often don't!
