So Robinson and Kavanagh have teams they did on Sunday again on
boxing day?
Gillett is doing Spurs in the EFL game midweek? What if he has
an absolute shocker. He has spurs a week later- then you end up
doing replacements and its messy

It’s also a big game for a trial official between two of the
bottom 3 sides that are desperate for points. Brentford Wolves
would perhaps be a better fixture, although I know Brentford are
another club that get lots of trial officials and we don’t want
any more Wolves controversy!

I agree with the concerns about the way the appointments of Ms
Welch and Mr Allison have been presented. I haven't seen enough
of them to assess the merits of their elevation to the middle in
top flight games, though Rebecca Welsh did have a good game the
last time I saw her in action. Probably a couple of years since
last saw Sam Allison refereeing.
Mr Brookes did the Villa v City game last week, so thought other
options would have been preferable for Everton v Man City.

Congratulations to Welch and Allison on their appointments. Not
a massive surprise - the PGMOL were always going to use them on
a PL game at some point. Hopefully their games go well as
there'll be a lot of focus, rightly or wrongly, on their
matches, given the media promotion the PGMOL have done about
their appointments. They seem like good games to be given as
trial matches, and they have strong teams with them so fingers
crossed the ball runs smoothly for them both.
Can't help but feel there must be some slightly peeved SG2
officials though that have refereed for many years consistently
in the Championship that haven't been given the same
opportunities.

Very good debate so far.
The other side of debate is 'are other SG2 Officials that have
refereed for many years consistently in the Championship that
haven't been given the same opportunities' peeved off when
Barrott & Smith got few matches in the PL this season?

Not if they felt those who have been given games are better than
them and that to me is the issue. Have the best 4 SG2 referees
been given the chance to referee PL matches? If by some fair,
transparent system they have, then meritocracy works. If,
however, it because the appointing bodies can use it as a public
relations exercise then its wrong. Not the fault of the
officials and I really hope they perform well.

Agreed but to give you a little secret, promotion from L3 and
above has never been entirely based on being top of the merit
table for many years. This has taken off more in the last
couple of seasons so it's a mixture of being around the top and
assessment day for invited Officials only.

It will certainly be interesting what happens over the longer
term. There have been various reports that some specialist VAR
roles have been advertised (I presume this means these officials
would no longer referee on-field) so it will be interesting what
happens there.
It does seem there's much more of a blend now - I think this
will be 5 SG2 refs who've taken charge of PL games this season,
and there aren't necessarily going to be many obvious vacancies
going forwards in the short-term (subject to above point about
specialist VARs) so perhaps we'll just see some SG2 refs used in
PL as a matter of course.

Looks like Linnington has sworn on oath not to wear y***** when
in darsetshire.
Taylor to make sure GLT is in working order at Villa Park.
Congratulations and best wishes to the two trialists over the
xmas period.
Well deserved appointment for Kavanagh and Tierney with
Liverpool away.

I though when Rebecca Welch got her Premier League debut, I
thought she may at some point this season, I watched her in the
WSL game between Arsenal and Chelsea and she was no nonsense
which I did like even if Arsenal did get the more yellows but
they were all deserved, but going back to my point I did want to
make when she did make her Premier League bow I thought it may
of been an all female team on the pitch wither herself
Sian-Massey Ellis and Natalie Aspinall but I was clearly wrong
although Natalie is on VAR
