Not sure how much more clear and obvious it could to be honest,
tripping a player and not being anywhere near the ball is a
clear foul - it was probably more obvious than the foul VVD
committed seconds later and there would have been no overturning
that. As for your second point, that’s pretty much what happened
with the penalty that was given.

I've seldom been so angry in my many years as a Palace fan. If
the 'foul' by Ayew (was it a foul?) in midfield justified a
yellow card, then we might as well all pack up and go home.
Andrew Madley dug himself into a hole with that yellow, but even
so, he failed to issue yellow cards to Liverpool straight after
for what were more obvious fouls than Ayew's. But then AM
started to wave cards around like confetti. It could have ended
up 10 v10 or 9 v 9, except that the Liverpool players were
obviously savvy as to what was going on and made sure they
rotated the fouls so that no-one could end up red-carded. I
don't often support managers who get yellow or red cards for
outbursts but I fully support Roy Hodgson in this case. The
result may mean the end of Roy' s reign at Selhurst Park and/or
relegation from the PL with all its financial repercussions, and
it is no good Howard Webb apologising or seeking to justify
Andrew's performance. I'm a Palace fan, yes, and proud of it,
but that performance by Andrew Madley would not have been good
enough at Crewe Alex - my other love - and it was certainly not
good enough in the PL.

It would be an indirect free kick for offside as that happened
before any potential penalty. Referees only go to the screen
for offsides when there is a subjective question mark as to
whether the offside player is interfering with an opponent.

I think the second caution is a bit on the soft side, but
remember it was for stopping a promising attack so once he gives
the free kick there he gives himself little option. SPA doesn't
take into account how little contact there is, once the foul is
given it will be a caution if the referee deems it stopped a
promising attack. Liverpool had a potential breakaway as Gomez
was outside the fouled player and free to be played in.
Interestingly on another forum that is only populated by
referees almost everyone thinks it was the correct decision.
Rio Ferdinand tied himself in knots, he said it was a tactical
foul but shouldn't have been a caution but those two things are
mutually exclusive, if it is a tactical foul it has to be a
caution.

I haven't seen the game, so I can't comment on the incidents,
but how will a defeat on 9th December - and not the first one
recently - mean potential relegation from the PL?

Let’s all stop commenting - and it’s rare I do - the direction
is clear, let’s just take the opinion of Roy Hodgon and Acme
Thunderer and have done with it.
Mr Madley wasn’t great today, as I said earlier, but it’s not
costing Hodgson his job. Hyperbole at its greatest. 1-0 up with
15 minutes left and a man down doesn’t automatically mean you
lose. You can adapt your tactics.

Solely watching the Match of the Day highlights, which of course
showed all the salient moments, just confirms my view of Andy
Madley, an average referee who today put in a slightly less than
average performance.

Cant comment on all of the game, but would say its nice that a
referee has sanctioned rather than managing the game. Everyone
grumbles when a referee manages the game and when the referee
takes action everyone grumbles.
Who would be a referee, damned if you, damned if you dont.
