Grealish confronted the 4O who last week sent-off the Brighton
captain for words said out of turn to him, so the lack of ANY
sanction here isn't very good, is it?

If you speak to any referee they will tell you they have done
this. It is a horrible sinking feeling when you realise you
have blown the whistle just as a striker has broken clear. Not
the same level but I did it in an Isthmian League local derby in
front of over 1000 spectators, one of which was the Chairman of
my county FA, I beat myself up about it for days.
Just one of those things, a human error, just like Erling
Haaland missing a near open goal was a human error.

Grealish confronted the 4O who last week sent-off the Brighton

Not knowing what was said to Taylor a second yellow if it was
dissent or a straight red if it was foul or abusive language.

What a shame that happened as he was seconds away from getting
through a tricky game without comment and having, like Kavanagh
at the Etihad last week, enhanced an already good game. Only he
will know how it happened - did he not see Grealish? Did he
think Haaland had over or under hit the pass? Or did he just
make a hash of it? Having had such a good year last year the
balls not rubbing for him at the moment.

From a City perspective, I didn't think Mr Hooper was at his
best even before the aborted advantage at the end. The YC for
Grealish handball seemed harsh, considering the location and
lack of intent. The failure to caution Kulusewski for tugging
back Guardiol felt lenient as it meant he could risk chopping
down Grealish shortly after and stay on. There were a few
occasions of delaying the re-start or taking set-pieces which Mr
Hooper ought to have clamped down on.
Like other posters, I have no idea why Mr Hooper changed his
mind on what was a great advantage call and what followed was
unsavoury. Although there was still work to do and no certainty
that Grealish would have scored from that position.

The Grealish caution was for delaying the restart, he kicked the
ball away. Hooper made this clear on the tv, but may not have
been visible to those at the ground.

I feel a bit sorry for Hooper. As was said in today's Times I
thought he controlled the match perfectly well until that
fateful intervention. Rather like a Defence barrister making a
really good closing speech to the jury almost convincing them of
their client's innocence only to finish with a flourish " and so
ladies and gentlemen of the jury you surely can have no other
option than to find the defendant guilty...I mean not guilty "
What is so strange is that Hooper signalled an advantage ( this
rather wet one armed raised signal now used these days ) and
then when the advantage accrued he brought it back. I can only
think that from his viewpoint it did not look like the attacker
had got possession of the ball and broken clear and so to ensure
justice awarded a free kick. A bit like ( though nowhere near as
bad ) as Brian Hill's infamous whistle for a free kick in the
1988 Cup Final which you could argue helped considerably towards
Wimbledon's defeat of Liverpool.
Mr Haaland has gone on social media describing it as a WTF
moment. If I were Hooper I would be sorely tempted to go on
social media myself and show Haaland's appalling miss in front
of an open goal ( this by a multi million pound a year striker
let us not forget ) and say WTF; but of course that would get
him into trouble. No level playing field when it comes to airing
opinions publicly.

I have certainly done it too. I found the key thing to heading
off the sort of reaction that the Manchester City players
produced is the referee's reaction: body language and words. A
literal hands-up and "sorry, I messed up" will defuse a lot of
it. It's harder to angry with someone who is already beating
themselves up about it. Even if it doesn't placate the real
hot-heads there are usually calmer voices nearby who will accept
that a genuine error has been made and take them away.
