Craig Pawson - Chelsea vs Brighton

Dreadful second half from Pawson.
Caicedo should have been given a second yellow card on at least
2 occasions - nothing given by Pawson other than a (correct)
caution for Gilmore for asking the question.
Penalty for Chelsea a subjective decision, correctly given as a
non-penalty on field in my opinion. However, VAR intervened and
overturns the decision. Then Milner is only given a yellow card
despite it being a clear DOGSO once a foul has been given. No
attempt by Milner to play the ball and it could be argued that
it’s a push anyway, so attempt to play the ball shouldn’t come
into it.
Terrible decision to award Brighton a late penalty for handball,
correctly overturned by VAR. Craig then gives Chelsea the drop
ball rather than Brighton a corner. Seems a very strange
decision given the ball was clearly out of play before he gave
the penalty.
Handbags at the end, unacceptable from both teams, who I’m sure
will be punished. But all match control by Pawson had long since
gone.

Gallagher should have been sent off before he was.
Milner clearly shoved Mudryk over, was a penalty and should have
been a red.
The Colwill “penalty” was a nonsense in real time but when the
VAR overturned it then I believe the play resumes with
possession to the defending team.

So Brighton lose the chance of a corner thanks to a poor
decision from the referee? I understand a drop ball being given
if ‘live’ play is stopped, but it wasn’t. The ball had already
gone out of play.
Understand your view on the Milner foul, I can see why a foul
was given it just wasn’t a foul in my opinion. Clear red card if
a foul is given.

If the ball is out of play, technically the referee cannot give
a penalty. Therefore, it's am incorrect decision resulting in s
drop ball, which as it was in penalty area,goes back to GK
That part of the law he got correct

I think you’ve misunderstood what I meant, or taken it too
literally. Clearly the ball was in play when the ‘offence’
happened, hence a penalty could be correctly awarded. Pawson,
however, did not stop the game whilst the ball was in play, the
ball has already gone out for a corner.
It’s become common practice since the introduction of VAR for
referees to wait for the passage of play to end (for a few
seconds at least) before giving a free kick or penalty kick.
Brighton should feel hard done by.

Q) A penalty is awarded but a review overturns the decision. How
does play restart?
A) In the case of no foul, with an uncontested dropped ball to
the goalkeeper. If there was an attacking infringement in the
build-up, like offside or a foul, play restarts with a free kick
to the defending team.

Pawson seems to be a referee on the decline, he seems to rely
very heavily on VAR these days.

I think that Pawson was correct with restart based on what's
been described but I agree it seems a bit of an odd law.
I remember a Reading game in 2016, not involving VAR, where the
referee initially awarded Reading a penalty after a good tackle
by a Hull defender. The assistant called the referee over to
advise it had been a clean tackle and so play restarted with the
Reading corner as the whistle had not gone until the ball was
out of play. This seems a much more logical approach to me - as
mentioned it seems odd that Brighton don't even get a corner due
to a poor referee decision (it's obviously different if play is
stopped with the ball still in play.)

So if a Brighton player had come across to Pawson and said it
hit his head its not a penalty. Pawon could in theory of changed
his mind, assume he then gives a corner?

First of all the incident didnt have var so probably correct in
law to restart that way.
With var, i assume, the game is deemed to have stopped at the
point of the infringement or non infringement in this case, not
when the referee gives the erroneous decision, hence drop ball
to defending team(goalkeeper).
Secondly only the referee will know when he has blown his
whistle for the alleged infringement and it may have been before
the ball went out of play.
