IFAB MEETING

IFAB have had another brainstorming session I see.
Sin bins in Professional Football. OK, the majority of us have
made that work at grass roots when applied for dissent.
HOWEVER
The idea seems to be to extend it to be used for some extra
offences.
Will this proposed extension of range also be rolled out in
grassroots?
Here's a doozie too!
Only Captains are allowed to approach The Referee!!
I have officiated numerous games where, in all honesty, the
Captain is probably the least amenable player on the team and
consequently the absolutely last player I want to see coming
toward me. Giving them an even greater sense of entitlement
won't help things at all IMO.
All views / opinions most welcome as it seems like something we
will be discussing for a while with a good amount of debate no
doubt

Which means that the rest of the players will have to bellow
their dissent (or worse) from a distance.

The option to apply sin bins to non-dissent offences already
exists. However the FA decided that their implementation would
only include dissent cautions.
I agree re captains. Some are excellent, some significantly
less so. There is a skill to identifying other players who can
be useful to a referee. Preventing them from communicating
freely will inhibit this and can not be a good thing. Any
player who is a pain can already very easily be told to stay
away and keep their thoughts to themselves or suffer the
consequences.

I'm all for trialling new things although I don't think IFAB
have an especially good track record on delivering change.
Would a sin bin apply to 10 minutes of ball in play time or just
10 minutes of the match? If the latter you can imagine quite a
few teams looking to run down the clock by getting treatment,
making subs etc.
If you can get a 10 minute sin bin for a cynical foul which
stops a promising attack but there's no punishment at all if an
advantage is played then I think that could end up being a bit
controversial at times.

Most Captains I encountered were decent enough, the worst were
the ones who were too clever by half and thought they knew the
Laws very well ( invariably they didn't ), these tended to be
the self appointed Captains. I remember on one occasion there
was a Captain who had been giving me GBH of the earhole all
match and in the last minute when he started his nonsense again
I just said very wearily " O Captain! My Captain! " At the final
whistle he asked me what I meant by it. I told him to watch the
film Dead Poets Society and all would be revealed. If only he
knew, it was actually a back-handed compliment.
There's a report doing the rounds which said Owen Farrell and
Luke Pearce had a little contretemps last weekend where Farrell
was telling Pearce how to do his job and Pearce replied " thank
you, I can count " and then Farrell then berated him for being
rude. I don't know but I suspect ironic humour isn't perhaps one
of Farrell's fortes. If he thought that rude, it's a good job
Farrell wasn't playing Association Football when referee John
Key was in his pomp !

That worked well for Brighton at Nottm Forest last weekend didnt
it !!

I think consistency is the key word here. For example, a cynical
foul would be a pull back stopping a promising attack. But, we
already see pull backs not punished by a YC possibly because it
is on the edge of the pitch or there are plenty of players
behind the ball. But there is a grey area and in my view, any
and I repeat to emphasis this, any pull back is cynical. I can
see trouble ahead....
Interestingly, Nigel Owens and Rob Baxter from the rugby union
world and who are well respected have cautioned about using sin
bins.
I applaud the principle of sin bins though.

Still nothing about concussion and concussion temporary
substitutions. It’s much more important the sin bins which will
inevitably lead to further controversy given the consequences of
playing with one less player for a period of time.

Probably because no-one has yet worked out how to stop teams
"gaming" the system to their advantage.

Hopefully, the goalkeepers won't be Captains anymore...
Especially for attacking penalties. They would have to walk 100
yards to have a conversation about a potential penalty, then go
100 yards back afterwards. Boy, they will be tired.
Otherwise, if they are not the Captain, perhaps they will stay
in their box (literally) and not go for mass-con around the
referee.
