Robert Jones - Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

Am quite amazed we've gotten to Monday evening without a
discussion on Mr Jones yesterday.
A lot of his foul detections given and not given were excellent.
Seemed to have a good grip on both sets of players, considering
Aston Villa spent a lot of it actively trying to kick the home
side out of the game.
But but but, 2 key match incidents he has gotten wrong here.
Cash takes off and properly whacks the only recently returned
Bentancur round the shin, with zero intention to play the ball
and off the ground. The Uruguayan has another lengthy spell on
the sidelines through a thuggish act. It may come into the
orange territory for some, but for me it's a red all day long
and it would to anyone who has played the game. Cash then made
another iffy foul on Udogie 10 minutes later, which would have
given Jones the chance at balancing his earlier error (in my
opinion) out. Cash being taken off at half-time rather said it
all....
Second half saw a 50-50 looking challenge between Lucas Digne
and Kulusevski. But from where Jones was stood, and his
linesman more to the point, they simply had to spot Digne
kicking Kulusevski's ankle with quite a lot of force. Right on
the line, but bizarrely barely checked by Gillett on VAR!!
Considering the penalties we've seen tonight at Fulham (again
against Wolves!), Tottenham can feel aggrieved here.
3 offsides against Son Heung Min all correct, well done to the
assistants for swiftness of these.

The Cash foul on Bentancur wasnt a good one, def yellow and poss
orange but from all the interviews and reports incl from the
Spurs manager states the injury was to his ankle which would say
contact was low and not on the shin, which might have been the
mitigating factor.
I thought Jones had a reasonably decent game, some foul
detection a little random at times, tried to stay in the
background but still managed
To get hit by the ball a few times and break up passing
movements.
I did remark to a friend of mine who said the referee was giving
Spurs everything that i thought he was being a little lenient
and possibly on another day with another referee Villa might
have been down to nine by half time. Cash and Kamara might both
have seen 2 yellows.
Jones managed the game as his employers seem to like referees
doing.
The tight decisions on offside all correct on field except the
Watkins disallowed goal just after Spurs scored which i thought
immy was offside but took Var an age to disallow.
Villa rode their luck and Spurs if they had been clinical enough
would have had a cricket score by half time, so Spurs can only
blame themselves for the loss.

I like Jones, and knowing how Postecoglu manages his teams I
suspect he likes him too as he's very keen not to whistle which
allows the team to build up the high press and take quick set
plays when the opposition are still on the heels. I didn't see
all the game but what I did he seemed to not be giving fouls
unless he absolutely had to and I felt for the mostpart the
players reacted well to it and just played the game. I do think
his facial expression sometimes gives the aura he'd like to be
anywhere but on the pitch but I think he's a damn fine referee.

Had Cash's challenge not caused an injury it wouldn't even be
being talked about. He's seen the ball and gone for it but is
very late and taken the player, but contact was low and he
wasn't out of control so no way it can be considered SFP.

He hurt his ankle being twisted in the ground as a result of the

How can any right-minded footballer do something like that?
Where is the accountability? How can you go out on a pitch as a
professional and do something so mean-spirited when the ball is
gone?
I am flabbergasted.

By the way folks, 2 weeks time is Newcastle's visit to
Tottenham. A combined 23 injuries between both sides' squads,
so approximately half of all outfield players unavailable. Has
this ever happened before?!
And a lot of it due to challenges like Matty Cash's yesterday.
Cowardly with no punishment or repercussions, other than
Bentancur being back on a treatment table for many, many weeks.

Poor challenge - yes
Intent to target a previous injury? I just don't see that. It's
a YC and no more (in my opinion)

JMB1992 you really need to take off your Spurs tinted specs
here....Cash's tackle was a yellow, maybe an orange but not a
red.
I'm sure you will feel the same about any similar tackle made
by, lets say, Romero and Udogie this season?
It looks as if all of the Spurs fans prayers have worked as by
all accounts Bentancur will be off his deathbed with his bruised
ankle and be fit for the game on Sunday. 🙄

Noticed that with the Villa goal just before half time which was
confirmed as not being offside, Tim Wood I think was about
one/two meters behind the last defender. Got the decision right
but it seemed poor positioning considering it was from a set
piece
