Wow. Only 7 minutes in and he has hit a huge call wrong
The player moved his arm to the ball. Def penalty for me
He really needs to get these big decisions right. Further proof
He is out of his depth.

That was impossible for Attwell to call from his angle as
looking side on, really needed the AR on that side to give it.

From the replay on the BBC sport website it would appear that
the newport player who crossed the ball is bang in the eye line
of the assistant as the ball is handled. Do you guess it? Most
on here would say not. Attwell had no angle through no fault of
his own. Will be disappointed when he sees it back

I agree about the unfair treatment he gets he is not the worst
by a long shot but some people can’t let go of the past

I’m sorry but people saying he didn’t have a view are wrong he
had a clear view and got it wrong. As far people saying we have
it in for him and there are worse refs. They are partly right,
there are worse refs. BUT you expect the refs who are considered
to be the better ones and wear the FIFA badge to get the big
decisions right and unfortunately Mr Attwell has recently got an
awful lot of his decisions wrong. Yes he did well to come back
from his demotion. But for me he is now beyond his capabilities.
Saying there are worse refs is okay but does not justify the
standing he is given against the ability he is showing.

I think the issue is that that he “cut the grass” to indicate it
defiantly wasn’t a penalty so what did he see?

Agreed, from the camera angle immediately behind Stuart, I think
he probably felt the ball hit the side of the defender's body
rather than his arm. The camera angle from the touchline was
much more decisive in confirming that the ball hit the
defender's arm and a penalty should have been awarded. However
this would have been the angle seen the AR on the nearside, and
if he missed it for any reason, I can see why the penalty was
not awarded as it should have been. Oh for VAR I say! A pity
because I thought Stuart had a decent game in v. trying
conditions.
Edit - as an aside, Shrewsbury were apparently furious with the
Wolves winner which followed an alleged foul on a Shrews player.
But the goal was confirmed by Lee Probert following consultation
with the VAR, something which was not available to Stuart at
Newport.

I agree with AT - from the referee's viewpoint I could see how
there could be a possibility that it hit his body and then arm
and so he could not guess if he had any doubt.
The Wolves goal is an incident just before the goal which should
have been penalised imho - the Shrews player was pulled around
by Adama Traoré wide out and a couple of passes later Ivan
Cavaleiro received the ball and scored fairly. I guess it is a
question as to how far back you go for VAR? 1 pass, 2 passes or
more?
Howard Webb gave an insight "When evaluating a game-changing
decision, any call made in the "attacking phase of play" can be
reviewed. Defined by him, that typically is when "a team moves
toward the opponent's penalty area with some purpose." I guess
the Adama incident fell foul of that definition - the purposeful
advance occurred after the "foul". So not a failure in VAR
because of the protocol that has to be followed. If anything a
failure by the referee.
