Agree with this. Possibly a case of things evening out - got
away with one, harshly penalised for another. Whilst it wouldn't
have been given in the PL, that type of foul is almost always
punished in UEFA comps. Seen virtually the same in the last 2
Hungary games albeit neither in the box. Bulgaria game it was a
free kick to Hungary & offending player booked, game v
Montenegro free kick to Montenegro and Hungary player booked.
UEFA will support the decision and intervention as they did in
both of those games.
I strongly suspect the reaction to the decision though would
have been vastly different had it been given at the other end.
People would have been justifying it in that case - it was a
foul, he made contact with the face and his arm had gone
backwards. 100% innocently/non intentional/accidentally but in a
UEFA game it is a foul.
It wasn't the best performance by Glova but I have seen a lot
worse. The reaction on Law 5, where the majority are not
English, is very different. Far less scathing and the majority
supporting the penalty. What lets Glova down the most, imo, is
his demeanour, he's never been a smiley ref but after his smile
during the coin toss his angry face came out and stayed for the
whole game and his reaction to any dissent was far too
aggressive. He's been out injured and prior to that he seemed to
be calming down a bit, unfortunately he was back to the
unapproachable ref he has been too often in the past. He's
slipped back from just looking very serious to looking angry and
ready to be confrontational & that's not a good look. He really
does need to learn to chill out a bit. Still cute though even
when grumpy but Kassai's death stare is still the best one ever.
All that said, I'm sorry guys but England are looking very poor
right now. What has happened to the exciting team you once had,
that really wowed? The ref may not have been on top form but
neither were your team. I was bored senseless watching as a
neutral. Thankfully I was spared Dion Dublin!

The commentary for the Maguire one was hilarious.
“Not a penalty because he caught him with his upper body not his
lower body”.
No wonder refs at all levels have to deal with rubbish when
nonsense like that is being banded around on national tv.

We've won the group, haven't we? And qualified? Again.
It reminds me of when a team has won the title or promotion and
then suddenly starts losing games they would have won at a
canter a few weeks earlier.
Dublin is a terrible TV pundit and presenter. Not sure how he
keeps getting airtime.

Absolutely agree about Dublin.
He's not got a clue what he’s on about and the drivel he comes
out with is incomprehensible.
Quite frankly he shouldn’t be anywhere near a commentary box.

I don't blame him for the penalty, that is purely down to a
ridiculous review recommendation by VAR, and we know that
referees in UEFA are under huge pressure to go with VAR if they
are sent to the screen. The issue is, and again a VAR issue
rather than the referee's, if he was sent to the screen for the
Rico Lewis challenge he certainly should have been sent to it
for Harry Maguire's challenge which was far more of a penalty.
The Lewis challenge might well have been a penalty, but it most
certainly wasn't a clear and obvious error not to give it.
Where I did have issues with the referee is his positioning was
atrocious. He had to jump over the ball at least three times,
and also had to take evasive action on several other occasions,
at times I felt like I was watching a newly qualified level 7
referee, he seemed to have no idea where he should be running.
On one such occasion he ran from out wide to run across the
front of Jack Grealish as he had the ball on the edge of the
penalty area, I have never seem a senior referee do anything as
basically bad as that.
The other issue was his decision making was all over the place.
He lurched from letting a lot of physical contact go to
penalising minimal contact, often within the space of 30
seconds. This obviously frustrated the players, and added to
this he let a lot of foul play go without sanction, there were
31 fouls and the only one that drew a caution was for the
penalty to Lewis. The other two cautions were for dissent, and
I cannot remember the last time I saw a senior level game when
there were more cautions for dissents than fouls, especially not
in a game with that may foul offences. I don't think he will
get another significant UEFA appointment this season, it was a
very poor performance on a technical level.

Sadly, many human beings are unable to do their job to their
full capability when someone is looking over their shoulder. It
also affects people who may be carrying out simple tasks, such
as typing, sewing, painting etc. ---they do not feel comfortable
when people are standing over them.
Officials are human beings, every one is different, however, at
the top level they have VAR looking over their shoulder and
this will have a profound effect on a number of them,
consequently, they do not do the job to the best of their
ability.
Get rid of VAR and you get rid of this problem. We can then
criticise officials for their onfield performance and not
constantly be questioning whether or not VAR should be involved.
End of the day, VAR just introduced further opinions on what we
fans and ex-officials see differently anyway. The game is dying
on its feet as a spectacle with long delays while the committee
decide on a decision which may, or may not, have been correct in
the first place. Heaven forbid that this plague spreads further
down the pyramid.

If referees can't do their job when people are looking over
their shoulder they won't progress far. We are all observed
from a very low level both professionally (for progression) and
informally (by people watching games who all have an opinion).
No one will forgive a centre forward for missing an open goal on
the basis that someone was watching him; it goes with the
territory. Refereeing is a pressurised role. Anyone who can't
cope with such scrutiny is not in the right job.
