On the Sky Sports website, Chris Foy says of the incident
involving the Swindon forward and the Harrogate GK: "There is
certainly contact between the attacking player and the
goalkeeper, initially when the ball is making its way into the
box and then further contact when jumping for the ball. I think
given that the attacker's arms are in an upward position and
impeding the goalkeeper's ability to take the ball, the decision
to disallow the goal is one I believe is the correct call."

This usage of names has got me thinking. Regular RTR readers
will know of my great appreciation of Joe Worrall. Now
interestingly I would never refer to him as just Worrall or
indeed Mr Worrall but always Joe Worrall. Some may have wondered
whether I know him personally. I don't, in fact I have never had
the privilege of meeting him even, perhaps one day I shall. My
admiration is solely based on watching his performances.
So in future I shall use both given and surname when referring
to a match official but I'm still not sure about titles.

Why do people who should know better keep wittering on about
contact? There is nothing in the Laws to say you can't touch an
opponent in this contact sport of ours.

Very true but it all depends on the amount and type of contact
and what effect it may have on an opponent. In this case, I
assume Chris Foy is making the same point that I made about not
being able to challenge the GK in the goal area when he's not in
possession of the ball. Indeed, he says about the contact
impeding the GK's ability to take the ball. Valid point well
made I would say.
