Jacob Miles Harrogate v Swindon Disallowed Swindon goal
   DIR By: Oldref
       Date: November 20, 2023, 9:02 am

Last minute of the match on Saturday ball is crossed into the
area. Young the Swindon forward stands his ground and the
Harrogate goalkeeper reaches over him and drops the ball. Young
back heels the ball over the line.
Young did not back into the keeper. A perfectly good goal. No
complaints from Harrogate BUT for some reason Miles disallows
the goal for a foul. Unbelievable.Looked at the video several
times and no way was there a foul. Not the first time this
referee has been in the news. Looks out of his depth
       unfortunately.

Why the 'dislike', Seagull? Seems to be a valid point of view
put forward by Oldref, certainly in relation to the 'goal' which
       was disallowed. Care to elaborate?

Please be aware that referee Jacob Miles picked up an injury in
the first half of the match and was replaced by specialist
Assistant Referee; Matt Sowerby, who refereed the second half in
       its entirety.
I'm sure he can be forgiven in these circumstances...

I’m sorry but Jacob Miles is not up the standard, I watched his
performance at Gillingham vs Mansfield. Gave a goal when he had
his card in his hand and already started disciplinary
       proceedings

I didn't realise making one error in a game (which I'm sure he's
learned from) in your first season as an EFL referee means that
       you're "not up to standard".
I think you will be hard pushed to find a referee who is up to
standard, if that's your measuring stick!

And of course any referee that makes a mistake at any level is
not up to the standard and should be sacked immediately …….
       🤦🏼‍♂️
Why do we have this need for perfect performances and not an
understanding of human beings. We’ve all got things wrong on the
park and we’ve all had to learn from them.
he is not responsible for the incident listed in this post and
you are talking about one isolated incident in his entire
season. I haven’t seen the incident you referred to so I can’t
comment on it but yet again, this forum turns into the
       opportunity to bash someone.
Jacob Miles has made it to L1 as a football referee and has
officiated in Grand Slam finals in tennis. To say he is not up
to a standard to operate a high-level is clearly not the case.

Yes, I would care to elaborate. I suspect the "valid point of
view" may be somewhat biased but even if not, it's a very
subjective matter. Following the original comment, I looked at
the highlights and in my opinion (and as I say, it's very
subjective), there seemed to be contact and a foul on the GK as
he was challenged in the goal area when not in possession of the
ball. I would contend, therefore, that the "goal" was correctly
disallowed. Also, I dislike the comment "not the first time this
referee has been in the news", whatever that's supposed to mean
or allege and who are we to judge whether a referee is "out of
his depth" at EFL level when many of us on RTR never reached
anywhere near that level?! Finally, I think it disrespectful to
refer to any Referee (and players for that matter) by just a
surname. In this case, "Mr. Miles" or "Jacob Miles" would have
       sounded a lot better.

You make some very fair points Seagull which I broadly support.
I am though someone who does refer to match officials by their
surnames, though interestingly I don't when referring to a
female official which you can rightly point out is a difference
which perhaps isn't merited. I guess it's about how names are
being used. I have always seen using surnames as establishing an
essential equality between myself and the person referred to.
Neither looking up nor looking down. However, I suppose nominal
usage alters and so perhaps it it better to use the given name
with the surname. Of course with some sports using Mr denoted an
amateur status while professionals were referred without title.
Perhaps then SG1 and SG2 could do without titles but they be
applied to all other officials in the Pyramid !

You're welcome. Using just surnames reminds me of my schooldays.
Yes, I did see that it wasn't even Mr. Miles who was the
official concerned with the disallowed "goal". Good lesson for
Oldref - check one's facts before casting aspersions.
