What was he looking at given that was where the ball was and the
play was at walking pace? They have got to stop these VAR slow
motion replays in slow motion and show them at normal speed.
Also the first look on the OFR should be of the full incident
not frozen at a single point in time.

Sorry Brunty, but this is quite off the mark. The 'challenge'
is unexpected, so the fact the referee takes no initial action
is reflective of the fact he missed it, not that he deemed the
contact to not even be careless.
Also, the 'slow motion' debate is a red herring here. In real
time, any experienced referee knows that feeling of 'oh' and you
clench up when you see the challenge. The slow motion replay is
required to confirm POC (i.e. on ankle and not boot) - it isn't
used to determine the level of force. The force is fairly clear
from the manner in which the player's ankle flexes. I have time
for the slow motion discussion, but wrong challenge to dissent
I'd suggest.
Interestingly, the Guardian Football Podcast, which I judge to
be fairly measured, unanimously agreed with the decision, and
were quite disdainful of the former pros. I also agree with
their assertion "if that's not a red card by the LotG, I want to
know what you propose to change the wording to so that lunges to
the knee don't also become lawful'.
Finally - the way players react is a measure of nothing but
their own fairly mindless contempt. How often do we see
strikers flagged offside, be very clearly off, and turn round
and wag their finger at the officials? What's that a measure
of?
Edit: can't comment on the Holjund incident you mention, other
than to say VAR obviously didn't judge it to be a red card (was
it worse than James' from the Spurs game?). Perhaps it was
worthy of a second yellow, but that isn't a VAR call, and we
shouldn't be getting too upset about potential cautions that
referees opt not to give.
