Got to watch Gavin Ward today for the first ever time.
Certainly performed vastly better than any of Wednesday's
players, but I can see why he is viewed as "safe" rather than
someone for progression. First half there was a 5 on 9
challenge, he was happy to let it go but once it broke for a
promising attack he pulled it back for a "safe" defensive free
kick. Then similar again a few minutes later but up the other
end.
And he repeatedly does the thing that I hate, finding issues at
a corner that just don't exist. In the first few minutes he
stopped a corner being taken to talk to two players who
literally weren't within touching distance of each other, then
did this a couple of other times during the game. It really is
infuriating, something I always refused to do as a referee no
matter how many times I was told I should.
