Bristol City v. Sheffield Wednesday - Lewis Smith

There was a DOGSO sending off in this game for Wednesday's Barry
Bannan. Having seen the TV highlights, I think it was harsh to
interpret the foul (which happened in the "D") as DOGSO, given
that the GK and another defender were in a central position in
the penalty area between the attacker and the goal. For me, the
goal scoring opportunity was far from "obvious" and a caution
would have been sufficient. Does anybody who has seen the
incident have any thoughts? Mrs. Seagull is an "Owl" and was
somewhat miffed (with good reason I think).

Yeah when I seen the highlights I didn’t think it was a red card
there was 2 players behind the keeper that could of cleared the
ball from the goal harsh decision I think

I must say I disagree - for me, if he isn’t fouled the next
touch is a shot therefore making it an obvious goal scoring
       opportunity IMO.

I hope this incident is on the portal next week with comms.
Interesting to know what input was given.
The discussion surrounding DOGSO is that it's not routine with
two defensive players between the attacker and goal. Bannan is
stupid for committing the foul where he does.
Lewis Smith and his rapid ascension was discussed heavily last
week, this may now be continued.

       Foul? - yes
       Inside? - officials deemed not
This takes away any "attempt to play ball" mitigation
       GK along way forward
Next touch would give him a shooting chance
Under these circumstances has to be red

I'm a Wednesday fan and it is a clear red card. Had Barnard
gone to challenge the attacker then I would agree with no red
card, but he backs off to the goal line and therefore can't
impact on the attacker getting a shot away. You have a
professional footballer on the edge of the penalty area, pretty
central, with just the keeper and a defender who can't use his
hands to beat. Don't see how that can be anything other than
       DOGSO.

Red card for me, it's certainly not a clear and obvious error

Sheffield Wednesday appealed claiming wrongful dismissal and
were successful. No suspension to be served by Bannan. Must say
       I’m surprised by that.

Anyone who is ever surprised by any of the decisions of the
appeals panels has not been paying attention.
They are frequently perverse or downright ridiculous.

In my opinion, justice has been served. My original point was
that any perceived goal scoring opportunity was far from
"obvious" as is required by LOTG and I stand by that. I do
recognise that such matters are sometimes subjective, of course.
