Lewis Smith - Ipswich Town vs. Fulham (EFL Cup)

Had never heard of him before this fixture and presume this
might have been his biggest appointment so far, a high-flying
Championship team against a semi-established Premier League team
in front of 28000 fans?
Anyway, I thought he did really well, didn't seem to be fazed by
the occasion or the so-called stars on show. Was good to see a
yellow card issued to Lukic for waving an imaginary yellow card
in his direction for a foul by a ITFC player. Shame he didn't
also issue a YC when a ITFC kicked the ball away after but
that's the only thing I'd have done differently.
Looks like we have the makings of another Michael Oliver/Sam
Barrott/Josh Smith on our hands. How old is he, as he looks very
young?

Michael Oliver is obviously a rare case having made it to the
Premier League by 25 irrespective of his family connections. I
simply don't understand why people lump Josh Smith and Barrott
in the same category. Is it simply due to age ? Bobby Madley was
in the PL before 30, John Brooks as an AR in his early 20's.
Lewis Smith is ERDG which effectively means he can be placed on
fixtures all over the pyramid as PGMOL deem fit. He had a
championship fixture last season. In his case, there is at least
a physical resemblance to Oliver.

Difficult to substantiate that claim.

I have seen Josh Smith referee twice. Extremely competent on
both occasions but clearly I am failing to see the nascent star
quality which the authorities see.
I haven't as yet had the pleasure of seeing Lewis Smith.
For those who have seen them both a few times ( perhaps coming
up through the pyramid ) who do you think has the greater
potential ?

Have seen Lewis smith twice , once in league one where was
perfectly competent and handled a loud crowd very calmly ,the
second time in the championship where he was dreadful, has
developed an arrogant swagger and didn’t know a foul if it was
under his nose , I was soooo disappointed in him, I thought from
the league one game he would go and kick on , but he’s now
believing his own hype.
Josh smith I have seen once a couple of years ago and so can
make no judgment.

This is the potential issue with the ERDG. The very name of it
suggests a high degree of hubris and elitism. I haven't seen too
much of Lewis but he does resemble Oliver aesthetically, not
necessarily in refereeing style. Such a group is destined to
produce hyper fit, low body fat robots and nullify any ounce of
personality, except maybe the arrogance you mention. A second
year 2A regularly getting championship games in interesting.

I didn’t rate his performance so highly unfortunately. Awarding
of fouls felt a little on the strict side at times but not too
bad. The blemish for me was not handling Fulham’s time it took
to take corners and goal kicks. It felt like an age and I only
ever saw Lewis hurry them up gently twice, 8 minutes felt light.
Jimenez one he got right and the one in the first half near AR1
where an Ipswich player smashed a ball away should have been a
yellow too. Nice to see him caution for waving the card too.
As I said in the league cup thread, he was in the national
league twelve months ago and is now at a top end Championship vs
Premier League clash. I just felt it was a bit too far for him
myself, at least for now. He didn’t come across as arrogant for
me but didn’t seem to have much communication with players

He's only had two this season and one last season but your
points are valid.
I and, I suspect, most of the crowd last night thought he was
poor and scarcely an improvement on Saturday's performance by
Gavin Ward.
Ipswich made 11 changes and Fulham 8 so not really "a
high-flying Championship team against a semi-established Premier
League team". I rather got the impression that Lewis Smith
thought the match was being played for his benefit rather than
him being there for the match. First half he found it much
easier to award free kicks to Fulham than to Ipswich. His foul
detection was inconsistent veering towards random and there were
a couple of outrageous fouls not penalised at all. I suppose
Ipswich could consider it a compliment that a Fulham team which
by then included 5 regular first teamers felt the need to
indulge in pathetic time wasting against a Championship second
string.
I think he is over-hyped and being pushed too quickly by an
organisation desperate to find some decent emerging young
officials. Josh Smith is, in my opinion, significantly better
(despite my down on him for postponing a National League South
match at the last minute due to a miniscule muddy patch).
Despite this, I don't doubt he will make it to the top. He seems
to have been chosen.

Anyone looking at the ERDG group in isolation would be forgiven
for thinking that 30% of our referees have a BAME background and
of the rest, 30% are women.

I’m not too clued up on the development programme but from what
I do know, I agree with refgod above. I didn’t quite understand
the “realignment” that happened this summer, taking some
seemingly average officials (in my sole opinion) and promoting
them. Tom Nield and Sam Allison being two examples. I’ve
certainly seen better performers with Colchester over the past
few years that are still on the national list.
Alignment is an awful choice of word, makes it sound like a
forced promotion rather than an earned one, regardless of which
one of those you think it is.
