Rob Jones - Man Utd vs Newcastle

A reasonable performance from Mr Jones, but one within which he
could have quite easily booked a few more and sent a couple off
had he been so inclined.
After about 5 mins, he didn’t issue what looked a fairly routine
YC to Joelinton for a shirt pull on Regulion. He also decided
against booking Regulion for waving the imaginary yellow card in
the same incident.
Hannibal was quite fortunate to avoid a second yellow card in
quick succession after around 20 mins and I guess he must have
been put on a final warning by Mr Jones at that point as he
looked scared to tackle from that point on.
In the second half, Regulion was booked for a foul and was
arguably lucky to avoid a second yellow for dissent in the same
incident for petulantly strutting off across the pitch
gesticulating wildly when called across to receive his caution.
Including the one he didn’t get for waving the imaginary yellow
in the first half, he could easily have had 3 bookings in the
game but only got one.
Towards the end, Joelinton also received a booking, so there’s
an argument that he could well have been off too had the
possible yellow card in the first half been given.
Notwithstanding all of the above, I don’t think the issues
raised above changed the outcome of the game and the players
seemed to generally respect Mr Jones, perhaps with the exception
of Regulion as mentioned above.

I have no issue with his performance but I have no idea when a
YC should be issued for a pull back. Certainly there are
occasions when referees keep their card in their pocket
including our top officials. Is it any wonder we have comments
like that is a second yellow, therefore red. Is Is arbitrary.
Rob Jones tried to manage the game and got away with it. As for
Manchester United's players, they have lost the plot. Something
is not right there and usually that means the manager goes!

Let’s hope they suffer a similar fate at Craven Cottage on
Saturday.
Either that or they’ll wallop us!

It is a YC if it stops a promising attack or is done recklessly.
Not all pull-backs meet these criteria.

Thank Ref Watcher for the clarification. I guessed as much but
it does seem subjective and a cop out. It is a deliberate,
cynical action. Petty, unnecessary and breaks up play making it
less of a spectacle but that is my opinion of course. I
therefore watch less football!

It isn't a cop out, it is what is written in law. if it isn't
SPA or reckless, and very few shirt pulls are going to tick the
box for reckless, there's no mandatory caution.

Of course the million dollar question is "What is a promising
attack?" given that a promising attack can quite easily star off
with the goalkeeper. There have been lots of bookings for shirt
pulls which have not involved an attacking move.

Surely shirt pulls are always deliberate though, so there is an
element of cynicism, of cheap defending? Therefore, should
result more often than not in a caution, if an attack is
developing in anyway

It is a cop out - by the governing body of football, not the
referee. Jones was OK, he applied the Laws as he saw fit. But I
still feel referees can exercise discretion which leads to
accusation of inconsistency.
I like Jones and he will have a good career.
