I agree that he's been one of the best referees this season,
after a below-par season or two previously - he's also been
supported very well by his assistants.
I heard a discussion about refereeing on the radio earlier in
the season where the presenter suggested that he believed this
was intended to be Mike Dean's final season - I don't know
whether that's correct or if circumstances might have changed. I
hope Mike Dean considers refereeing for another year because of
his form this season (he could potentially get to 500 Premier
League games in that case!) but if he thinks it's right to end
now or wants to go out on a high then that would be
understandable too. He'll certainly be missed whenever he stops.

he most number of games? Can anyone advise of who is in second

Mike Dean has refereed the most PL games, in the modern era,
followed by Martin Atkinson (approx 100 games fewer); the next
three in order are, I believe, Graham Poll (329), Phil Dowd
(307) and Howard Webb (297).

My initial post on this thread indicated that Dean had refereed
470 PL games (now 471 of course), Atkinson 367 (368), Poll 329
and Dowd 308 (although this might have included Phil's last game
at ? Burnley when he limped off part way through the game). So
Andre Marriner may well be approaching Phil Dowd's total and 4th
place.

The timing was lousy for Dean or he would have probably had a
better FIFA career himself. When he was 1st category he had
Clatts, Howard Webb & Martin Atkinson ahead of him in the elite
group. All excellent referees who had decent FIFA careers and
time on their side in terms of none would be retiring while he
was still young enough to replace them. We had that phase where
we had more than enough referees to be good enough to be
considered for elite whereas now, you just need to be in the
right age bracket! Ok that's not all required but you know what
I mean!

He had Poll, Barber and Bennett ahead of him to begin with. I
expect that age counted against him when Atkinson, Clattenburg
and Webb arrived.

Again, why is Hackett getting involved. I couldn't care less
about the mannerisms as long as the decisions are correct.

That's what makes Mike Dean Mike Dean.
If you notice, in any sport, be it football, rugby, ice hockey,
american football etc, the referees that display character and
not a wooden side are the referees that are more liked by
players and spectators alike.
This assumption that you should referee without character or a
personality is wrong.

I very much agree with Matt. In the world of Rugby Union, it is
pretty generally acknowledged that Nigel Owens is just about the
best of this and indeed any generation. Because Rugby referees
are miked up we get a good sense of their personality. It might
be argued that Mr Owens' Welsh banter is irritating to some
ears...but it reflects his personality which helps make him the
great referee that he is. I think it's substantially the same
with Mike Dean and many of the referees who do not conceal their
character in their refereeing.

Different people have different characters and Mike Dean has an
extrovert one.
Much rather see a guy enjoy his job and Ref with a smile on his
face than trundle about with a face like a melted welly and I
would venture to suggest the players do too

Hackett would easily be categorised as an official who trundled
around the pitch!!

And I think it’s worth adding that Hackett had a great touch of
arrogance about him! Just look st some of the ild footage of him
booking or reprimanding players and it’s clear to see. He also
had an above average card count.

I saw Hackett live on several occasions. 'Trundled' is a good
descriptive verb for his usual movement around the pitch but
when he got it into his mind to do what resembled a sprint, then
he became a bit like a charging rhino. Heaven help any player
who got in his path during one of these charges.
His manner never appeared to me as arrogant, just rather full of
himself.
