In terms of Dean's international career, I think that BMB is
right that he was a bit unfortunate in terms of the quality of
English referees around at the time.
I'd also say that Dean really accelerated later on in his career
- I think that he was the best referee in terms of consistency
between 2008 and (around) 2014, by which time he was in his
early 40s.
Of course he was a perfectly good referee before that but I
think he really stepped it up in that period - I suppose you
could perhaps ask the question as to whether some officials have
benefited domestically from not officiating at the top level
internationally. I don't think Alan Wiley ever made the FIFA
list but I would put him as one of the top Premier League
referees alongside Dean.

I think he is still one of the best we have. Yes he is now in
his 50s, and yes he is a bit flamboyant, but he very rarely
makes a serious mistake. As long as he can still keep his
current level of fitness up, and he was right on top of things
today, why should he even consider giving up?

For many years I have thought of him as the best 'big game'
referee we have - someone who is not swayed by a cauldron
atmosphere and seems to thrive in it.
His SFP detection is also very good - can think of several
examples where he has shown very brave RCs early on in a game
(including Martin Taylor on Eduardo)

I agree that he's been one of the best referees this season,
after a below-par season or two previously - he's also been
supported very well by his assistants.
I heard a discussion about refereeing on the radio earlier in
the season where the presenter suggested that he believed this
was intended to be Mike Dean's final season - I don't know
whether that's correct or if circumstances might have changed. I
hope Mike Dean considers refereeing for another year because of
his form this season (he could potentially get to 500 Premier
League games in that case!) but if he thinks it's right to end
now or wants to go out on a high then that would be
understandable too. He'll certainly be missed whenever he stops.
In the Premier League era, I presume that Mike Dean has refereed
he most number of games? Can anyone advise of who is in second
place?

Mike Dean has refereed the most PL games, in the modern era,
followed by Martin Atkinson (approx 100 games fewer); the next
three in order are, I believe, Graham Poll (329), Phil Dowd
(307) and Howard Webb (297).

Thanks - although it just occurred to me that Andre Marriner
might have made the cut because I seem to remember hearing the
commentator saying for the Huddersfield V Man City game recently
that he'd received a presentation before the match as it was his
300th game?

You could well be correct, I only had figures available until
the end of 2017, hence I did not quote exact figures for Dean
and Atkinson; Marriner may well have passed the 300 mark by now
!. Thanks for pointing that out.

My initial post on this thread indicated that Dean had refereed
470 PL games (now 471 of course), Atkinson 367 (368), Poll 329
and Dowd 308 (although this might have included Phil's last game
at ? Burnley when he limped off part way through the game). So
Andre Marriner may well be approaching Phil Dowd's total and 4th
place.
