Thanks for posting that, exile. I must confess I have found his
flamboyant style slightly irritating at times but seeing these
clips together, they do paint a picture of a real character,
which I think is perhaps somewhat lacking at the top echelons of
the game these days. Perhaps a bit like Nigel Owens in rugby
union, both can get away with it because they are also very fine
referees.

And significantly more mobile!! Yes Dean has lost some of his
speed but he’s probably still twice as fast at the age of 50
than Hackett was in his ‘prime’, if you can call it that!!
Hackett laboured around the pitch and carried far too much bulk.

For reasons that I will never know, Hackett had a more
successful FIFA career.
Dean certainly had a more “European” style of officiating than
the majority of others than I have seen in the English game.

Hackett's successful FIFA/UEFA career has always been somewhat
of a mystery to many. Certainly from early on his time on the
National List he had some powerful backers among the 'appointing
classes'. I believe Hackett received the honour of officiating
at the FA Cup Final at the end of his 5th year on the National
List having run the line in the Final 2 years earlier ( in the
days when senior lino was a top performing non FIFA referee ).
Extremely early, especially in those days. I believe he also
ensured he had a very good rapport with many of the clubs.

Although I was a moderate youngster when Hackett was entering
the latter stages of his career, I still kept thinking... how
does this guy maintain his fitness especially when you look at
how slender Lord Elleray was in comparison.
Were any others officials in Hackett’s era slow and cumbersome?

The timing was lousy for Dean or he would have probably had a
better FIFA career himself. When he was 1st category he had
Clatts, Howard Webb & Martin Atkinson ahead of him in the elite
group. All excellent referees who had decent FIFA careers and
time on their side in terms of none would be retiring while he
was still young enough to replace them. We had that phase where
we had more than enough referees to be good enough to be
considered for elite whereas now, you just need to be in the
right age bracket! Ok that's not all required but you know what
I mean!

IMO that says more about the functioning of PGMOL than it does
about the comparative abilities of individual referees

Just a shame he never got the international career he deserved -
think he could easily have held his own at a World Cup or
Champions League later stages
