Is Hackett having a laugh when he complains about “coasting” and
“work rate not good enough”.
If this match was played in his era and at the speed it is today
he’d be finished in ten minutes!
Give me strength!!

Spherical objects you kick and head on a football pitch to score
a goal. Ah yes ...

My learn’d poster is quite restrained with his terminology!
I can however get the succinct impression that more suitably
stronger words wouldn’t be out of place in reaction to the
comments made by K S Hackett.

When I retired from full time working, a very wise senior
colleague who himself had been retired for some while, gave me
this excellent piece of advice " never become one of those sour
and ungracious people who are always harking back to their
supposed glory days and bemoaning the competence and abilities
of the generation who come after you and don't ever say ' in my
day' " This colleague was then generous enough to say that he
thought the advice was really relevant for some people but was
probably fairly redundant for me.
Most of us have had the experience of junior colleagues who have
overtaken us in terms of rank and prestige. Some deservedly so
and others perhaps less so. Ambition is a fine thing in the
young but when the old feel they have not quite reached the
place in the pecking order which they believe they have
deserved, it is all to easy " to stretch the folly of our youth
to be the shame of age " This applies to football referees as
well as everyone else.

Dale Johnson suggests in his latest VAR column for ESPN that the
'Independent Panel' which reviews Key Match Incidents did not
judge the lack of intervention from Brooks for the first yellow
card challenge to be a VAR error.
However, he also indicates that the panel felt the better
decision from Oliver for the first challenge would have been a
red card. I think this is where a lot of people will have a
problem with VAR. Once only a yellow was shown for the first
challenge, Johnson also reports panel thought second challenge
should have been sanctioned with a yellow card (obviously not
something for VAR.)
For the record, Johnson also reports the non red card in the
Brighton V Liverpool game on the same day was not considered a
VAR error by the panel.
