It is interesting to look at the highlights from Sky. I have no
issue with the second yellow, correct in law and managing the
game does not mean ignoring dissent and other mandatory
cautions. We all should know that from the start of the season
there was going to be a crack down on dissent and for example if
2 players go up to a referee to dispute a decision one must be
cautioned. In this case I cannot be sure there was more than one
player but coming from 20 metres or more to remonstrate with a
referee, sticking your face almost in his, invading his personal
space then you deserve what you get.
This smacks of a losing manager picking on an easy target,
defending his foolish player when really there is no excuse and
not recognising that he hadn't done his homework properly or
effectively. Gillet is a good referee but he will not stand
dissent and players should have been made aware of this.
Actually I think many other referees would have produced a
yellow card here, imposing their authority and applying the new
       directives.
Finally there is the old saying. It is not what you say but how
you say it. Many players seem to think they can get away with
anything and rightly referees are to some extent now empowered
       to take action.
As for our of his depth - rubbish. He is a very, very capable
referee and has proven this many times.

Sorry but 'sticking your face almost in his, invading his
personal space' is a bit over the top. You make it sound like it
was Roy Keane not Dan Neil.
Referees are often complimented on here when they take a second
to think before they make a major decision but in this case he
didn't and in effect he made one which changed the whole
complexion of what had been an even and entertaining contest.
Yes it can be said that he was applying the letter of the law
but God help us if that lack of flexibility was adopted by every
referee in every match in every division. There would be hundreds
of abandoned games throughout the land every week.
Swearing and cursing is part of everyday life and has to be
taken in context. Dan Neil didn't swear at Jarred Gillet in a
personal and directly insulting way which makes the decision
       even more annoying.

To suggest as the OP does that no other refs have booked players
for dissent this season is stupid. I've seen it happen on a
number of occasions. The players were told at the beginning of
the season that dissent would be clamped down on. It is not the
ref's fault if a player chooses to ignore that. It is also not
Gillett's fault that some other referees may not have enforced
the law correctly. Every time I've seen Gillett he has been
very good. Sunderland fans like the OP need to look at the
stupidity of their own player and not blame the ref for
enforcing the laws and expecting exceptions to be made in this
       game.

I just think it is a shame that on a refereeing forum we can't
have a technical discussion about tolerance level of the
referee, how this compares to others in the league, whether the
moment for the SYC was correct, judging intervention level etc.
without an adversarial attitude towards anyone suggesting that
referees should have a low tolerance level for dissent, with
views backed up by loose claims about derbies, empathy and
nobody being left on the pitch - mentioned more than once.
My personal view as I have said is that the caution was correct
and that the player must take ultimate responsibility. I do
think there is a question if Gillett would have issued a SYC for
this in a CL final for example (I for one think he should) so I
do appreciate that some may feel that in a 'greater good' type
sense there isn't enough warranted for a dismissal here. I don't
agree with that line of thought, which doesn't matter, I just
find it a shame that a critical opinion can't be expressed, in
the main, without insulting the referee and implying
       incompetence.

Did not suggest that, I’d be ok if he enforced the laws
consistently but unfortunately not all were, he made exceptions
for violent conduct, simulation and stopping promising attacks
       throughout the game.

issue here is the red card- or second yellow which is completely
correct in law. It’s the fact that before the game Gillett has
said to the managers and captains pre-match, that he will manage
the game rather than resorting to cards, so he has done the
complete opposite of what he said he was going to do. That is
hard to accept for fans and players and Gillett has made a rod
for his own back. He should never have said that in the first
place, then there wouldn’t be this furore over a correct
       decision

I can absolutely guarantee that he didn't say that. What he
would have said is if your players behave and play the game in a
sporting way I will try to keep the cards away, he wasn't
offering them a guarantee that they could get away with
anything. Its the same as most referees say to the captains at
the coin toss, I say "work with me, if your players start
getting out of hand get hold of them before I have to and
hopefully I can keep the cards away". That isn't me promising
no cards, rather offering an incentive for the captains to make
       sure their players behave.

Sorry but that's pure speculation. Tony Mowbray was there and I
regard him as a pretty honest bloke who seldom makes negative
       comments about officials.

But Neil was seen deliberately moving towards Gillett and saying
something that clearly indicated that he was not happy with the
official. If he had sworn at Jarred in a personal and directly
insulting way, I would have expected the official to produce a
straight red, but as it was, he issued a second yellow for
dissent which, from the TV highlights, seemed justified. As
others have said, let the player and his manager look at his
actions following an earlier yellow card rather than blame the
       official.

What difference does that make? Whether it was one nil or ten
nil it makes no difference to the argument about the merits of
       the referees decision.
