Bravo. Btw: PGMOL have already 'overappointed' for this game (a
FIFA referee(!!) for 2nd tier match), and Oliver/Taylor are
refereeing PL games tomorrow. Who would be a better choice for
this match? Orsato, Marciniak?...
Why should a second tier match (in one of the most watched
leagues in Europe) between two local rivals not deserve a FIFA
referee?
It was arguably a more challenging game than some Gillet has
refereed in the Premier League.

No disrespect intended but a thirty mile distance is hardly
local.
The club's are not even in the same county.

Far too many.
I don't go to games to watch players crying because the ref
hasn't given a kick their way, or throw themselves to the ground
because someone in row z sneezed or to listen to them swearing
and shouting and having a melt down a 2 year old would be proud
of because the mean referee didn't pander to their self entitled
bratty behaviour.
If professional players can't learn and abide by the LOTG, act
like actual professionals, show some respect for other
participants in the game, including the referee and can't manage
to kick a bag of wind around for 90 minutes without screaming,
shouting and yelling the F word constantly then perhaps they are
in the wrong profession.
This is one of the worst takes I have seen about this incident.
All I can say is thank God you are nowhere near the lawmakers -
this version of the game would lose supporters faster than you
could count.
Gillett has never struck me as a very "nice" referee. He doesn't
seem respected by the players or have a good rapport with them.
I don't think he has come across well in the VAR clips that have
been released in the way he addresses and speaks to players.
There are also PLENTY of professions were swearing is accepted.
Also, saying "that's a f*****g foul" is not swearing AT the
referee. It is using a swear word within a sentence. Calling the
referee a swearword would constitute swearing at an official.
What happened today doesn't.

There is no doubt that referees have a very difficult job and
one they do in general very well HOWEVER there is a case where
they have to EARN that respect.

From your comments it seems to me that you have a grudge against
Gillet I personally feel he is a very good referee and a VAR and
yes he has given decisions against my club in the premier league
that I don’t agree with but that still doesn’t mean he is a bad
referee

“Divisional North-East Rivals” then, if we’re being

How many times did Sky refer to "derby match", "local rivalry"
or "bragging rights" before, during and after game?
To most observers, including those of us in the North, it is a
derby/local rivalry

Who gives a damn whether it's a derby or not? The player showed
dissent, while already on a yellow card, and got sent off. Too
many salty fan posts in here.

It's still dissent, hence the second caution.

Albert Mehrabian famously argued that only 7% of communication
actually comes from the words we choose and I think that’s a
prescient point for this discussion - Gillett didn’t issue a SYC
because someone swore at him, he did because a player showed
dissent and was disrespectful. If he approached the Aussie-born
ref in a calm manner and said “come on ref, he’s f***ing fouled
me there”, I personally wouldn’t consider that dissent and I’m
sure Gillett wouldn’t either. It is really annoying to read “if
he can’t handle industrial language then he shouldn’t be
refereeing football matches”, because that is not the point at
all!
There is a discussion about whether what happened is enough for
a SYC — Pierluigi Collina for one would definitely have turned a
blind eye here — and whether Gillett’s decision was a bit
‘kneejerk’, but given the focus that everyone knows about this
season, any Sunderland complaint about this incident is
clutching at straws to be perfectly honest (especially when the
argumentation involves “well it is a derby”).
I can’t speak to the rest of the game though; but would be more
than happy to review incidents, if someone gives me the
minutes/timestamps for other key scenes :)

Time for a bit of perspective here I think.
Personally, I think Jarred Gillett is an excellent referee, he
tries to stay in the background most of the time and only gets
called upon to act when he has to. I’m a cricket umpire and if a
player spoke to me like that on the field like the Sunderland
player spoke to Gillett, then an on the spot sanction and report
would follow. Foul language should not be tolerated in any
sport.
I did read, with amusement, the quite personal comments that
were made on this thread yesterday. They, thankfully have been
deleted. By all means criticise an official for a decision, but
don’t bring in personal attacks, however wound up you may feel
about the game.
To say also that Gillett has an abrupt style in dealing with
players is based on two audio recordings of matches. The
Brentford v Bournemouth is one of the matches
referenced……Gillett had awarded a penalty and was then
preventing dissent and possible time wasting. Sometimes a style
like this is necessary and believe me, some players need some
discipline to bring them into line. After all, Wayne Barnes in
rugby union talks to players who step out of line in exactly the
same way. There was no rudeness in what Jarred Gillett said,
just to the point.
Also there is an accusation that players don’t respect
him…..well I think they do because he doesn’t put up with bad
behaviour and isn’t a pushover. He comes across as a nice guy
when interviewed and is a down to earth individual, and his
decision making is better than most of the Select Group
officials. I saw him have a belting game in the FA Cup last year
where he had some tricky calls to make but got them all correct
- a sending off for a handball, a caution for a dive etc.
There does seem to be an element on this site of when a team
loses, the objectivity goes out of the window and the referee
gets blamed, irrespective of whether they’re right or not. I
also don’t buy into this narrative that the sending off
yesterday was done to
make headlines. The players and managers know what the situation
is, and I’m pleased to see a lot of the refs this season taking
action over dissent and boorish behaviour. There haven’t been
the appalling scenes that we saw with Mitrovic of Fulham with
his misbehaviour towards Chris Kavanagh last term. And we all
should be thankful for that.
I applaud the moderators for weeding out the unseemly comments
and trying to bring back the objectivity to the site. We all get
annoyed and upset when our team loses, but when a player gets
cautioned for a foul, then he should keep his trap shut and
avoid getting his team into trouble. That’s the player’s fault,
not the referee for being “over sensitive”. It’s a strange world
where someone can be panned for doing the job correctly.
Anyway that’s my two pennorth for what it’s worth, now can we
get back to being objective and not personal?
