Letexier and Team - Atletico v Feyenoord

I'm maybe naïve but I can't see how that first Atletico goal can
be onside. Ball played through to offside player, defender
slides back and intercepts it and lays it into the path of
Morata. The defender only acts because of the offside player
and had he not done so that attack ends there and then. Was
flagged on the field, VAR summoned the ref to view on the
monitor who gave the goal but for me this was wrong.

In law the player in an offside position doesn't do anything
wrong, they don't interfere with play (no touch on the ball), an
opponent (no challenge, or obvious action) or gain an advantage
(no touch on the deflected pass).
I would say they'd gained an advantage if they received the ball
as the defender made a non-deliberate play under the new
guidelines, but they don't and Morata was onside at the initial
       pass so that doesn't matter.
I do agree that this doesn't feel right, but it's an issue with
the way the law is worded and I don't necessarily know if
there's an easy solution aside from more tinkering or more
guidance (which there is at the elite level to do with
proximity, but this instance doesn't fit that).

It is clearly a goal and I’m not sure why the flag was raised.
Nothing wrong about it in my view and nothing wrong in terms of
wording of the law for this situation. It should be a goal.
Otherwise we may as well go back to any attacker being in an
offside position when a ball is played forward is penalised, or
saying that an attacker who is in an offside position commits an
offence because a defender has to defend.
This is no different to lots of situations in most matches where
a pass to an offside player doesn’t make it to them / is cut out
by a defender and the game continues.

I get that, but while this was a deliberate play, it was too
stretched for him to control it which led to it landing at
Morata's foot. He only had to try to intercept it because of
the offside player. It's fine to play on if the guy can take a
touch and make a pass but, this haphazard touch was taken to
prevent the ball going through to a guy who was clearly offside
       - I'm not saying team ref got it wrong per the laws the way
they're worded, but I have a massive problem that the laws and
or guidance are worded in such a way that the outcome from this
incident is a goal. But I would argue that he is kind of
interfering with the defender as forced him into a play he
       didn't want to make.

       That’s just simply not offside.
Whilst the defender is stretching a little to cut the ball out,
he is unchallenged when he does so and it then falls to a
completely different player who is not and never was in an
       offside position.

The deliberate play/deflection debate only applies if the ball
goes through to an offside player doesn't it?
If the offside player doesn't touch the ball then to commit an
offence they need to be regarded as interfering with an opponent
which means preventing them from playing the ball by obstructing
their vision, challenging the opponent for a ball, clearly
attempting to play a ball that is close which impacts on the
opponent, or making an obvious action which impacts the
       opponent.
I do appreciate the argument that sometimes the only reason a
defender attempts to intercept a ball is because they are
attempting to prevent it from going to an offside attacker who
they don't know if they're onside or not but I think the offside
law has operated this way for quite a long time now.
