That is a fair point dave I do agree that the PGMOL have created
a lot of their own problems. I don't know, perhaps I am being
mawkish but I feel recently a lack of empathy surrounding
mistakes made by referees, the phrase piling on comes to mind at
this point (not, I hasten to add, by any of your postings).
I do agree though that what happened on Saturday went beyond
simply a mistake as we normally expect. It seems though that
even normal mistakes have been elevated to the level of such
wrongdoing that the reaction, including on a refereeing website
is to be totally appalled - I feel this is unfair.
I would have to agree with you that things seem to have gotten
worse since Howard Webb took over. I think this is partly, or
largely, because he has made refereeing much more a part of the
conversation - the perception is worse for sure. He did this
with great honesty and integrity no doubt, but I can understand
why Mike Riley, wrongly in my view, ran a pretty closed shop. By
pulling back the curtain, coincidentally at the same time some
of the worst mistakes we've seen for some time in the EPL are
being made, Webb has made it open season on officials. Maybe
that is the wrong way of phrasing it, again I lack the ability
to properly articulate, I just mean to say that visibility comes
with a cost.
To be clear - I am not saying Webb has done anything wrong, I
have great respect for him and his approach to refereeing and
improving standards. I just feel the timing of making refereeing
more transparent, an unquestionably good move, couldn't have
been much worse.

Oliver or Taylor should be appointed as onfield referee for me
end of.
With regards to communications between onfield referee and var
they have to change the way in which they communicate, ie
talking through what should be checked and what the outcome
should be, they can learn a lot from rugby. Its a pity that the
authorities dont like seeing the replays on the big screen
whilst the communication is being broadcast, but i can
understand why.
I think also making all the communication audible will improve
the communication between them.
