Arsenal vs Man City: What Do PGMOL Do???

Next weekend, last years title fighters go head to head in
arguably the game of the season so far
It is clear to see that Michael Oliver had been pre planned for
this game, however with a terrible showing from him today in VAR
and him missing one of his usual ARS for the foreseeable future,
surely this appointment now lies in doubt?
You then go through other possible scenarios: Taylor, Pawson,
Jones, Madley and Kavanagh from the form group all being
unavailable due to having one of these teams in their last 3,
while Attwell, Tierney and Hooper are all in poor form, so what
do PGMOL do?
This is a dire situation. I would suggest that due to the lack
of options, Oliver will still be appointed, with most likely
Betts or maybe Bennett as his 2nd AR. Gillett and Brooks are the
only other 2 options, yet both have shown tendencies to hit the
panic button when under pressure in big occasions previously.
It's clear to see however PGMOL is in a bad way right now.

The unavailable due to having had them in the last 3 can
probably be discounted considering how often officials are
allocated the same team 2 games in a row - started as early as
game 2 this season and is something frequently commented on week
in week out in the appointments threads from over the past
couple of seasons!

If Pawson gets Arsenal v City after his showing vs Wolves then
I’ll get off. I don’t want to be a part of a world where that
level of performance is seemingly rewarded with the biggest
fixture of the season so far.

Andy Madley has gone this season, I think he is quietly having a
great season, probably been the best referee so far this season.
Anthony Taylor most likely for me. Oliver second but after a
horror show on VAR today, perhaps not

I think it will very likely be Oliver. It's one of the safest
appointments they could make which seems sensible, especially in
current context.

Problems, problems and more problems. This is proving to be a
very difficult season to say the least, but IMHO Michael Oliver
will get this game, he is our number one referee.
With so many of the officials out of form, it is a dilemma that
Howard Webb can do without. I’m not sure I quite agree with the
comments about Jarred Gillett and John Brooks, they haven’t been
too bad in point of fact, which doesn’t say much for the others.
Michael Salisbury has been doing ok on field, so too Andy Madley
but all we seem to talk about is about how bad VAR is. It’s a
system which relies on human input. Cricket and rugby union
(with the odd exception) deals with technology without too many
issues. Football seems to have a big problem with getting
correct application of protocols. Then the muck hits the fan big
time when we get mistakes like the ones over the weekend.
My solution - either improve the processes, get rid of the
system completely or get other referees in. Because the current
crop are definitely well below standard.

It strikes me that now if an official has one bad game, the
specter of that performance looms over them for quite a long
time. Oliver, Pawson, Brooks and Gillett are in my mind very
solid EPL referees. Form is temporary as the saying goes and
without a further chance one can't show their class.
I think the PGMOL has major major problems at the moment but I
think there is a certain hysteria developing in the narrative
right now that isn't fully warranted. I'm sure Michael Oliver,
if/when he is appointed is fully capable of doing his usual
first rate job whatever happened this weekend. Perhaps I am
being too harsh in light of events this weekend (which I myself
called farcical) but to me there seems an air of anticipation on
the site recently, almost reveling in the next big mistake and
when it will come. I don't have the eloquence to put my finger
on it exactly but it really seems like the PGMOL and all their
officials is a huge stick to beat referees with at the moment,
even amongst fellow referees/officiating enthusiasts.

I understand what your saying and totally respect it and to a
degree I accept it. However on this occasion, it was
miscommunication , human error call it what you will but to a
extent the PGMOL have brought it on themselves with ridiculous
appointing using the officials that were in the UAE when you
factor in time differences , travelling it could probably have
been avoided and imo aswell as others it was a mitigating factor
and played a part as they obviously weren’t 100% focused
I think peoples main axe to grind is that VAR is still operating
as if it has only just been introduced and they don’t seem to be
learning from past mistakes it’s turned into such a farce that
the use of VAR in the PL is the laughing stock of football ,
has it got worse under Webb ? That’s for another topic and il
let others answer that , personally I would say yes.
