James Linnington - Blackburn v Leicester

When we were last in the championship a decade ago, Linnington
was always one of the more consistent referees and drama rarely
followed him around. Fast forward a decade and it seemed the
same today, maybe a couple of dodgy calls but was always in
control of a frenetic game. Why has he never made the next step
to SG1?

He is a top ref and bloke
He speaks his mind and is honest. Not afraid to share his
opinion…
Probably the reason he has not been afforded the opportunity of
SG1

I think a lengthy injury when he was knocking on the door did
mot help. I trust it has nothing to do with him not being a
"yes" man

Interesting observation. Darren Bond had a good time out with
injury a couple of seasons ago but ended with a trial match and
is now SG2. Bobby “the favoured one” Madley last season had an
extended injury and ended up with a trial game. Both still seem
prone to injury.
As in most walks of life very often if your face fits you will
get on at the expense of others. This may be the case with JJ.
As much as he deserves it I suspect Linington will not even get
a trial game and will ended up as a reliable SG2 for the rest of
his career. Josh Smith and Sam Barrott are clearly being fast
tracked and will get a trial this season while sadly Linington
will be overlooked

I think the situation is a bit better now but for far too long
those being 'fast-tracked' were done so because someone in
authority liked "the cut of their jib" or there were
geographical biases. From what I have seen I happen to think Sam
Barrott is a fine official and has the potential to be an
excellent referee right at the top. Josh Smith, also good though
I don't see the potential star quality which others do.
I entirely agree about James Linington. A first class referee
who I don't think has been afforded the opportunity to join the
SG1 which I believe he has deserved.

Agree with the above comments and whenever James Linington has
took a Sunderland fixture win,lose or draw I have never been
disappointed with his performance.
As for Sam Borrott who I saw take our game at Sheffield
Wednesday last Friday night then truly"We forgot that you were
here" could well have been the chant directed at him such was
his performance.First class.

He was very good, but speaking as a Wednesday fan I'm pretty
sure a 16 year old newly qualified L7 could have refereed that
game given how abjectly bad we were.

around the corner RustyRef for Sheffield Wednesday.

Thanks, but it isn't looking good. If the owner carries out his
threat we'll be in administration by November, it really is a
mess.
Also a bit off topic, but hope it will be allowed given the
nature. There's obviously been a lot of interest in the press
about the absolute morons who held up a phone with a photo of
Bradley Lowery on their phone last Friday. Wednesday fans were
appalled and set up a Go Fund Me page that has so far raised
£16,000 for Bradley's charity. West Brom fans, who we play
tomorrow, have also arranged to have a minute of applause in the
6th minute for Bradley and there will fund raising at the game.
Just goes to show how good football fans can be in the face of
adversity, or in this case stupidity.

Well said.
I live and work not far away from the village where Bradley
lived and everyone has been appalled by what happened.
