If this cock-sure approach you say is something that is common
amongst top level referees, is it possible that this is
something that is needed to deal with the egos being vastly paid
and arguing about every decision? If a referee is unsure or
nervous looking people complain about then being indecisive.
When a referee holds themselves strongly we say they’re
cock-sure or arrogant. I don’t think they can win!

For what it’s worth, I thought he handled an emotionally charged
high profile game in a level headed and calm manner. From the
footage I watched in the comforts of my own home I thought he
picked the right cards and generally got most things right
(admittedly the penalty with Tierney’s help).
On a personal view it was very pleasing to see him cautioning
Odegaard for the imaginary card waving and Bissouma for his
clear dissent (helps when it’s one from each team for balance
too). I liked his strong approach to these matters as it really
laid down the law and I don’t remember anyone causing any
further issues after this strong message in the first half.
As another poster mentioned, I’d like him to come more left from
the corner that led to the penalty award to give himself greater
chance of spotting it in real time without VAR. However, I think
he should be very happy with today. I’m sure there will be
plenty more of these top games to come after showing he can be
more than trusted with them.

In response to JMB, I'm sorry but I cannot agree with your
assertion re "preferential treatment" for one team.
If you check back through Rob's career you'll see that I was
very scathing about him. I have, however, revised my opinion and
consider him, at present, one of our leading officials and
safest pairs of hands

The tackle by Nketiah was incredibly dangerous. No idea how that
wasn't given as a red by VAR but Gusto's was!

Fair point for sure. It is difficult for officials to win, I
just think Jones can find a balance. David Coote and Simon
Hooper attitude wise for me get it just right, two examples that
come to mind.

Pretty sure it wasn’t deliberate, as he started off quite
focused and fair. As it went on and crowd got more involved, he
seemed to give everything to the home side, in this case
Arsenal.
