       Josh Smith: Luton v Wolves

Can't comment on anything bar the 2 flash points. The RC was
correct, violent conduct. The Luton penalty however, a
disastrous call! Like seriously??? Something tells me Mr Smith
won't be in the PL again anytime soon or Brooks involved next
       week!

To be fair to Josh Smith, I can fully understand why the pen was
give in real time as the defender’s arm was up.
The criticism here should solely be for the VAR as this is
exactly the type of incident VAR was bought in for and should
correct. It wasn’t even be a matter of opinion (where the oft
used ‘justifiable’ phrase from here could be used) this should
have been overturned as a fact of the laws of the game.

Please quote which exact part of the Laws of the Game you are
       basing this "fact" on?

It was a clear penalty. Until a couple of years ago law said
that if the ball deflected off your body it wasn't handball, but
that was taken out. When the ball hit the defender's arm it was
almost vertically up in the air, that is a clear penalty under
       the current laws.

I look back at some of these responses - one says: "clear
penalty" and the other "disastrous call". What chance do the
       referees have?
The handball law is an absolute minefield - Ceferin made it
clear earlier this year that no one in the world understands it.
The current guidance is that if the arm is in an unnatural
position, regardless if it's a deflection, it's handball.
Otherwise the defender has a huge advantage as the arm cleared
it out of play for a corner, rather than remain in the danger
area. Personally, regardless of my club allegiences, I think it
is a fair guideline as players shouldn't gain from these
       situations.
As for "you won't see Josh Smith for a while". I've seen him
several times - including yesterday but before it, many times
last season. He is a class referee, who broadly had the control
of the game and would absolutely deserve a place in SG1. For me,
he is a future FIFA referee.

Having seen his TV interview after the match, perhaps somebody
could/should advise the Wolves Manager Gary O'Neil.

I wasn't aware this was a rule about bounce up however if it is
then that needs to be rewritten. Like what do you want the
defender to do in that situation. Anyone who's ever played
football should know that that shouldn't be given as a penalty,
unfortunately those who wrote the laws see otherwise.
