As others have said, this is sad news - particularly at such an
early age. Having seen him acting as Observer at Pittodrie in
2015, however, I did write that time had not treated him kindly,
so it is perhaps not entirely surprising.
I agree that he was an excellent referee, in my opinion one of
the best of his generation, though he was undone by one mistake,
as subsequently was Rosetti, both through errors more
attributable to their assistants.(Graham Poll was also undone by
a Danish assistant, but was allowed a second chance, where the
failure was ultimately his.) Sandor Puhl, too, fell rapidly from
grace after missing a dreadful foul.
The referee for the England Germany match mentioned was the
Uruguayan Jorge Larrionda, though in that case it is hard to see
how any official could have been in a position to judge with
certainty. He was in any case approaching the end of his career.
One other excellent referee whose career ended prematurely was
Zoran Petrovic, though I have always assumed that this was a
consequence of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.

RIP - a great referee
The story which is always does the rounds about the 1994 final
is that Peter Mikkelsen was pencilled in to do it (although he
didn't have the best tournament he was definitely the
favourite). However, FIFA president at the time Joćo Havelange
interrupted the referees committee meeting and fearing a
cardfest like the 1990 final said it should go to the ref who
had shown the least cards so far.
Would make sense as Puhl was not very experienced at the time
and had a rather ropey (if card free) tournament, missing Mauro
Tassotti breaking Luis Enrique's nose in his quarter final!

One thing I do remember from that 1994 Final was that Puhl had
two of the most useless Linesman to "assist" him. One of the
commentators said that Puhl was endeavouring to controll the
match single-handed " he's on his own out there" and , from
memory, he didn't do too bad a job of it.

That is the same rumour I have heard.

He probably had one of the best finals of that era.

He did although the game was turgid which definitely helped!

Correct. However according to my uncle (who did watch the whole
tourmanent as I was quite young back then), Coldesal had a
really good tournament and his appointment on the final was
justified.
Very sad news about Mikkelsen. A referee with personality which
will be missed. RIP.

Yes, Codesal's handling of the England v Cameroon QF meant he
became odds-on favourite to referee the Final.
I think one of the ARs in the 1994 Final was an Iranian who you
would probably would not have wished to meet in a dark alley at
night. Then presumably there were the language difficulties. I
agree Puhl refereed the Final well, with or without assistance.
Fixed for you AT - you deleted a [/quote] tag after the post you
were quoting and therefore the coding assumed your reply was
part of the quote! bmb :-*

Yes one shouldn't be too hard on Codesal. I remember that he did
have a good tournament and the Final itself was just pretty
impossible to referee by anyone.
Regarding Puhl's incompetent linesmen in the 1994 Final. If
memory is right wasn't the other useless article ( besides the
Iranian ) from Paraguay? It is certainly the case that Puhl was
basically having to do the offsides himself as his two
colleagues were so dopey they were missing everything. Not
FIFA's finest hour of appointing.
Mexico's Archundia ( spelling may be suspect ) was one of Jack
Taylor's linesmen in 1974 and did very well along with a South
American ( Barreto ? who lined two World Cup Finals) who also
did fine. Archundia's son nearly got the 2010 Final in place of
Howard Webb and perhaps should have done. Archundia had a
cracking tournament and was a first rate referee and although
the Final was extremely challenging for the Referee, due to the
spoiling tactis employed, I think it is generally recognised
that perhaps it wasn't Howard Webb's finest hour.

I do wonder if this has any bearing on why under Puhl's tenure
as Head of refereeing we have so many excellent young Assistant
Referees but little to no upcoming young referees. Of the
current 6 FIFA referees, 3 are due to retire in the next 2-3
years, 2 are dubious & the newest appointed is the only one with
promise as a future elite (imo), contrasted with the AR's where
we probably have at least 6 who could replace Ring & Tóth as the
elite. Only 1 promising young non FIFA ref in the NB1 as well.
