Paul Cooper .... after just 4 games

I think Paul Cooper's introduction to the ranks of National
League Step 1 refereeing is worthy of note:
In just 4 matches he has shown his yellow card 30 times, three
of which were accompanied by a red for the second yellow. In
addition, there have been 3 further straight reds. He appears to
be operating rather differently to the rest of his colleagues.
He is a shaven-headed police office who is a dog trainer and
instructor by profession. For every Howard Webb and Danny
Makkelie or even Dean Whitestone, there's an Alan Turvey or a
Lester Shapter.
Hopefully he can be advised that it's not all about him.

Have you watched all of the games? In the season I got promoted
from L4 to L3 I had 11 red cards in 14 games and something like
70 yellows. I finished top on both observer and club marks, so
was obviously doing something right. You can only referee what
is put in front of you, the number of yellow and red cards
cannot be an indicator of your performance.

I had no idea Alan Turvey was a police officer.
A very critical judgement on Lester Shapter; I don't remember
him being that bad. Saw him two or three times, he must have
saved his better performances for when I was present.
Another excellent police officer /referee was David Hutchinson.

Indeed so. Eight years working for Southend Police. He even
played for the Southend Police team in the local (now defunct)
Wednesday League. Yes, he actually played which will come as a
surprise to those who saw him referee. That Wednesday League was
a decent standard and comprised the likes of the Police, Fire
Brigade, Post Office, Gas Company, local colleges and other
clubs and companies who could put a team out on a Wednesday
afternoon. I refereed a few matches in it way back. How times
have changed.
Agreed, Lester Shapter was far from the worst but there was a
big question mark over his integrity surrounding him refereeing
whilst unfit to perform his duties. And agree again, David
Hutchinson was a very decent referee.

Some of the toughest matches I refereed were in the National
police cup.
I do remember doing one game where Norfolk were the opposition
and the "legend" that is John Tythcott was there (spectating I
might add)

Based off of the video and match report from Saturday, it
doesn’t reflect well on Paul Cooper, to say the least. Hardly a
fan or player appealed for the first red card, minimal jostling
as the ball ran through to the keeper and the defender was sent
off for DOGSO. The second was for verbal abuse but was noted
that it was mistaken identity (not sure whether the offender was
another Southend player).

Based on the video the dogso isn't even a foul let alone red ,
very very poor decision that wouldn't be acceptable at any level
.

The number of cards issued does not define a performance but if
one official is consistently showing 3 or 4 times the average it
can most certainly be an indicator. Of course I haven't seen all
of his matches (the highlights of one was enough!) but from what
I have seen, he is card happy and confrontational. I hope he
affords his dogs more respect than he appears to me to have for
footballers.
Personally, I never kept count of the number of cards I issued.
I bet he does.
