       S A HOOPER - Everton v Arsenal

Interesting offside given by VAR following the Martinelli
       finish.
Despite the ball being deflected by an Everton player I can only
assume that the offside was given for the initial ball forward
movement from the boot of Gabriel.
That said, those VAR offside lines didn’t look very accurate!

       A few points here
       1. The touch from the Everton wasn;t deliberate play i presume
       2. The VAR has different angles from the TV company
       3. I think its very difficult to draw the lines incorrectly now,
as its done automatically once they have plotted the players.
Gary Neville is pretty clueless considering how many features
       he's done with PGMOL.

Does it not make a difference that the pass from Gabriel which
was intercepted actually went sideways not forwards?

4 mins stoppage time is a major miscalculation 7 substitutions
and 1 goal would be more than that without arsenals delaying
       tactics since scoring. Very poor.

I was surprised by the lack of added time. There were 8 minutes
across the two halves. It obviously will differ from game to
game but I think generally referees should be looking to add at
least 10 minutes across the two halves to get towards 60 minutes
of playing time. It certainly felt like there were quite a few
       stoppages today.
I don't think that was the greatest co-commentary from Gary
       Neville.

Indeed, and in the woefully inadequate 4 mins and 22 secs added,
the ball was in play for less than 2 minutes!
Most referees would, in the current interpretation, have added
at least 7 or 8 mins. This is basic stuff and relatively
straightforward. There should not be these inconsistencies.

Very different to AFCB v Chelsea earlier where 9 minutes were
added on at the end by David Coote, despite no goals, no serious
injuries and a minimum of time-wasting. Glen Murray on R5L
thought there would be three minutes and seemed genuinely
flabbergasted when the board went up. Perhaps Mr Coote was
hopiing that a goal would come and send at least some of the
fans home happy, but in this he obviously failed (only joking).

I predicted 7 mins, 8 went up on the board and nearer 9 were
       played.

This is one of the biggest myths in football laws, that the ball
has to be played forward for offside to be penalised. It
absolutely does not, but unfortunately a lot of referees don't
       know this.
It was the correct decision. No way that could be a deliberate
play so the offside is judged from when Gabriel plays the ball.

The lack of added time surprised me too. Four minutes on the
second half would have seemed too little in that match, even
before the new regime but in the current climate was bizarre. As
posted above, given how little the ball was actually in play
during that time, the further 22 seconds also seemed inadequate.
If the new measures to ensure greater playing time and to deter
time wasting aren’t to be enforced in all games, then it’s a
waste of time at best and unfair at worst. If the refs at Villa
Park and Tottenham Stadium had taken the same approach as Hooper
at Goodison, there would have been wins for Crystal Palace and
       Sheffield United on Saturday.
