Peter Bankes (Spurs vs Sheffield)

Another dreadful red card decision. Olli Mcburnie was clearly
having his shirt pulled by the defender. He tries to move but
the defender falls over. Peter Bankes who was stood just five
yards away somehow not only decides he has fouled the defender,
then proceeds to show him a second yellow for complaining.

IMO both players are grappling with each other as the ball is in
the air, then McBurnie pulls the Tottenham player to the ground,
and the referee correctly gives a free kick to Tottenham.
McBurnie, despite already being on a caution, decides to argue
the decision, and consequently receives a second caution for
dissent.
Can't say I have much sympathy for the player here!

Agree, if it was for the foul it would be harsh, but it was
clearly for dissent.
They've been told, if they choose not to listen that is their
bad luck.

As I know we have both Blades and Owls on here can we add United
and Wednesday to Sheffield please. No risk of upsetting half of
those members and distinguishing from the world's oldest team
too. :) ;) ;D

I've just seen the highlights for this game.
1st yellow for McBurnie is a dead cert.
2nd yellow also under new directives is correct. A clear act of
dissent by action.
Added time correctly added (12 mins).
Sounds like Banks has applied the directives correctly.
Ultimately the onus now is on the players to keep the game
flowing and they risk a caution if they delay it, which I think
the SU GK was trying to do.

I’ve just read that 12 yellow cards were shown in this game,
this has to be record equaling of some sort, its at least level
with the infamous Chelsea V Spurs game a few years back. If you
include the sending off its actually more.

What I'm unsure of is how the challenge on James Maddison in the
first half was not a foul and, consequently, a penalty kick.

Dale Johnson has reported in his latest VAR Review column that
the 'Independent Panel' that assesses Key Match Incidents have
judged that the VAR was correct not to intervene with the
Maddison penalty incident.

Hard to believe considering he was swiped in the calf from
behind. Had to be a Tottenham penalty but bizarre not to be
judged a mistake in hindsight.
