Here’s how you move forward

Here’s how to improve refereeing, and make changes for the
better of the game. You listen to this interview from Paul
heckingbottom, you put into place actual education to help
referees understand the game of football, you get ex pros into
refereeing set ups, and you change rules to improve the game,
not the “TV product” which is all this new added time directive
it there for.

This is a constructive debate about how to develop the game, and
give referees the tools to understand football, which they are
currently lacking severely. If you listen to the points Paul is
making, and look at the reaction of football supporters from
across all levels of the game, even some step 7 representatives
joining the conversation, you’d see this is nothing to do with
one game result from one club.

That’s a disappointing and rather dismissive response.

On a more general point but very much relevant to the Spurs v
Sheffield games are there others who like me are getting a bit
concerned by the amount of tine being added on.
Yes I agree that in the past small amounts of stoppage time have
seemed rather inadequate in some games but 16mins yesterday does
appear a very excessive length and there have been manu other
matches this season with 10 mins or more.
I just feel that, in an effort to cut down on unnecessary time
wasting, we have gone from one extreme to the other

Not at all. I think it has been long overdue and I was glad to
see yesterday there was no backwards step taken after the
international break, with 8 minutes of added time in the second
half at Wolves, 9 at Newcastle, and the games at Aston Villa and
Spurs both finishing after 5pm.

I heard that interview live and nearly crashed my car , mr
heckingbottom is an absolute disgrace and needs to have a long
hard look at himself, I will tell him who needs education HIM ,
this constant whining about referees don’t understand the laws I
bet my house if you put him and his players in a referees exam
the vast majority would fail , the lack of knowledge from
managers who make comments based on what they THINK the law was
in 19 eighty whatever is commonplace, I firmly believe ALL
managers from national league upwards should not be able to take
up first post without having completed a full referees course
and referee a minimum of 10 competitive matches . Then we might
get a few tongues bitten , in the meantime hit mr heckingbottom
hard and make him sit in the stands for a few weeks.

Attitudes like this are why refereeing standards won’t improve
and why referees are alienating themselves from the rest of the
game and are making enemy’s out of managers, players and
supporters rather than working together for the good of the game
like we should be.
I’m in the fortunate position that I have played, managed and
refereed all to a decent standard, as well as obvious being a
supporter. Yes it’s true that many non referees don’t have full
knowledge of rules and nuances, however it can definitely be
said that too large a proportion of the refereeing community is
severely lacking in tactical and strategic understanding of the
game of football. And the examples Paul gives perfectly
highlight this.
“Education is needed to improve” is not a controversial
statement

By that argument though CharlieBoy every referee should have had
to manage/coach a team for a minimum of 10 games having done a
coaching course.
I had many very useful chats with a coach at a professional
youth team - I learnt lots about coaching techniques, bug bears
of coaches, whilst he asked about how players had
responded/reacted/behaved on the pitch
We need more engagement with coaches not less: unfortunately
football doesn't seem to be able to manage this

This is an absolutely terrible attitude for me I'm afraid and
only supports what Paul Heckingbottom said. Your entire post is
a literally an unintentional endorsement of everything he said
without realising it! He said referee's understand the laws but
not the game - and that to improve refereeing, officials need to
better understand the game. Anyone who can't support this
clearly has no interest in improving levels of officiating in my
opinion. It's something Howard Webb has suggested in interviews
several times - that they work continuously on developing the
referee's understanding of the game.
