Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace- Darren England (VAR Rob Jones)

Apparently the VAR review which was rejected by Darren England
took 4 mins, ridiculous. If it takes that long it’s not clear
and obvious.
However, it looked to me like the player may have just got the
ball before he got Watkins. I have only seen one angle shown on
highlights though. England has a habit of soft penalties.

Not convinced by the penalty at Villa park. Looks like Watkins
kicked the defender to me. The fact England spent over 3 mins at
the screen proves how much doubt there is over the decision
Side note: best wishes to palace manager Roy Hodgson who was
taken ill before the game

Richards caught Watkins first and then played the ball with his
other leg.
England gave the penalty onfield, the var asked him to review,
watching him look at the screen i was pretty sure he would stick
by his original decision he didnt look convinced to change his
mind.
Many people have asked for a referee to be called to the screen
in circumstances of doubt and when he is and sticks by his
original decision as he isnt convinced by the replays he is
shown to overturn his original decision criticism is made about
how long it takes.
Dont think it was clear and obvious to send England to the
screen, but i guess that is just two referees with differing
opinions seeing things differently.
The pundits on the radio seem to think England was right to
stick by his original decision.
Best wishes to Roy Hodgson for a swift recovery.

I think the defender gets a very small touch on the ball
initially. Not a clear and obvious error however, I think soft
penalty but right to stick with call

I think a penalty is a hard sell here when VAR has given the
option to see it again.The play on the ball is so clear, the
expected decision is a good tackle, and any light touch on the
player before the ball would technically be a foul but is never
normally given.
Other observations (not match changing like the penalty!):
- England never seems happy or relaxed to me. Far too tense and
never seems to be enjoying his work.
- Regardless of the PK decision, the subsequent attacker
encroachment was as blatant as you’ll ever see and should’ve
been a retake. The defenders spotted it and understandably
reacted. Why do referees at pro level make such a protracted
song and dance of setting up a PK, if they then ignore blatant
offences?
- usual moan about colours. Any other colour ref kit wouldn’t
clash with the black of one GK. Why not yellow/orange?

We will have to disagree then because I actually think he plays
the ball first, Watkins leaves his leg in to make sure he gets
caught so it looks like a penalty from behind. England was too
far away IMO to make a clear judgement

Hopefully we'll get to hear the full audio in Webb's next VAR
show as it would be interesting to hear a conversation where the
referee sticks with their original decision - although it sounds
like that might take up half the programme!

I've watched that one a few times and I honestly can't make my
mind up as one angle I think the ball gets nicked first, one I
think there might be a play on the man first. I'm not saying
that England was definitely right but I'm glad he stuck as I
definitely wouldn't be convinced he was right had he changed it.

For me the defender comes through the player to get the ball.
There might be the very slightest touch on the ball before he
touches the attacker, but that doesn't mean it isn't a foul.
When he makes the obvious contact on the ball he has come
straight through the attacker's legs.
I watched this with my non-referee mates on MoTD this morning,
albeit after a very heavy night out the day before, and they all
said it was a clear penalty. And they are normally all over me
on WhatApp when what they think penalties that are soft are
given.
Regardless of the right outcome, not really sure why Rob Jones
is recommending a review. Can only assume that he has asked
Darren England whether he saw the defender playing the ball,
he's said no so has been asked to go and have a look.

What on earth was VAR Jones doing to get so involved??? England
looked annoyed and frustrated … it was never clear cut no pen,
so no need for him to get England over!! This what fustrates
people.
England correctly turned Jones down.
Jones is best served imo trying to not drop further down the
pecking order, I feel when Webb took over it might of took the
handbrake off Jones but imo still doesn’t convince me as someone
up to elite level.
