It seems odd for Coote to be appointed as VAR as I believe he
came off FIFA list last season.
I guess it means he'll be absent from the Premier League for a
few weeks.

The PGMOL statement last year said that David Coote and Peter
Bankes will still be FIFA VAR officials.

Ah yes, thanks for reminding me of that. I now remember being
quite surprised as Coote/Bankes had often seemed two of the
weaker VARs in the Premier League.
The appointment makes a little more sense in that case.

They had them at the WC, mainly a back up role. They had the VAR
in a central location and the support VAR at the ground and they
were ready to take over if the comms went down. They will be
watching at the ground so they can take over seamlessly. That
was their role at the WC anyway.
