It may well be that the explanation lies in what the player said
rather than his action. Perhaps Marsden did initially try to
make a joke of it ( his body language starts off looking relaxed
) but if that was met with a mouthful of abuse, he was right to
show the red card. Not everyone can take a jocular comment. I
guess only the player and referee know precisely what happened.

Very true. The extravagant gestures immediately after the card
was shown do suggest, however, that Mr Marsden had momentarily
lost his cool (the plot?)

I can’t believe there are many of us who would manage to keep
their mouths closed if they had just received a firm and
unexpected poke in the eye. I would suggest whatever
instructions have been issued, there are circumstances where
they are ignored and simple common sense and understanding
applied.

Did that coincide with an instruction to use zero common sense?
Having had the dubious privilege of seeing him during his
mercifully short spell in the Football League, I am not
surprised that he has over-reacted in this extreme way. I
understand from some who were there, that this was far from his
only error in the match. A very poor referee who has perhaps not
yet found his proper level (for the avoidance of any doubt, I
mean downwards).

Having experienced Mr Marsland's very individual performance
levels several times I am astounded that he has managed to
retain Level 2A status as long as he has.
Some of this Season's 2As are below the required standard IMO,
many having perhaps been elevated from 2B too soon.
I cannot however think of any mitigation for Mr Marsland

Having experienced eight NL referees this season, I'm yearning
for the likes of Andy Haines and Carl Boyeson....
Paul Johnson was okay on Saturday, as was Gary Parsons the week
before, but some of the others looked well out of their depth.

I thaught Paul Johnson was going to be the best referee we've
had at Aggborough this season on his 1st half showing, however
his 2nd half wasn't the best.
We've had Paul Marsden numerous times over the years and I have
to say I'm surprised he made it to the national list but not
surprised he's back at 2A now.

Apart from EEL potentially escaping a second yellow card, I
can't recall anything of note from Mr Johnson in the second
half.

The FA have confirmed that Luke Summerfield will not serve a
suspension following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal
for violent conduct.

I find it sad that a referee gets promoted and then drops down
as a result of performance issues. It must be hard too accept
and affect confidence. I accept that players deserve high
quality referees and this is how it must be but it says
something about the way they are assessed that it happens.
Credit goes to Atwell but there cannot be many referees who have
been demoted and then bounced back better than before.
