accidentally caught him by the arm; I think he thought it was
another player trying to intimidate him and so he reacted rather
strongly, one might say over strongly. Were I the referee I
would have passed it off as an unintentional match incident and
made a bit of a joke about it and not issue either a caution or
a sending off.

Reminded me of the incident with the French referee (Chapron?)
who briefly lost his cool when he got tripped accidentally and
sent off the player. One of those incidents where you just laugh
it off (or let the player give you a red card 😂). Player
wasn’t bothered. Was the game already tetchy and he just lost
his cool??

I would be most interested to know from the esteemed
correspondents who registered a disagreement with my #Reply 5
what is the nature of their disagreement. Was it the player did
not realise it was the referee's arm ? The player reacted too
strongly ? The referee initially seemed to take no action ? The
referee may have received advice from a colleague ? A good
reaction was to make a joke of the incident and take no further
action ? Any or all of these ?

I'd be fascinated too, sometimes people just disagree or dislike
because they can I suppose. But I couldn't work out which bit
they disagree with either.

OK, here goes. I certainly don't think Paul had the time to
receive advice from a colleague. I tend to agree with Arbitre
anglais that he lost his cool (literally) and reacted in
completely the wrong way to the incident. Hot afternoon and all
that. I would hope Paul would hold his hands up to this one and
support an appeal against the red card before moving on.

What we don't know from this is what the player said. My guess
would be that is what triggered the red, especially as this a
PGMOL appointment and they have been instructed to use zero
tolerance. Really struggling to see what other reason there
could be for it.

Receiving a sudden and unexpected physical blow can be quite a
shock to the system so I certainly think it's credible that
Marsden lost his composure and couldn't understand the context
but received it as a deliberate assault for which a red card
would be the appropriate response.

I don't think there was sufficient time for his colleagues to
say anything to Mr Marsden. And if they did say anything like
you mention, I'd be seriously worried about their judgement.
But, having seen Mr Marsden officiate in the flesh, as it were,
his actions in that incident don't surprise me.

It may well be that the explanation lies in what the player said
rather than his action. Perhaps Marsden did initially try to
make a joke of it ( his body language starts off looking relaxed
) but if that was met with a mouthful of abuse, he was right to
show the red card. Not everyone can take a jocular comment. I
guess only the player and referee know precisely what happened.
