World Cup Chat

Fra v NZ
Straight off the bat kudos to Jaco Peyper, tonight looked every
inch the experienced international referee he is - I trust this
is the blueprint for his and others performance. Good decision
making, looked relaxed, even smiled once (great spot that Penaud
had touched the ball, knocking it on)
TMO was quick, incisive and helpful
ARs not so much - should be helping with individuals in front of
kicker in open play, one flag up one not on a conversion and CR
almost getting a line out position wrong from a kick direct to
touch from a mark, which by definition has to be in the 22 (but
cannot be a 50/22 as not from open play - something I learned
tonight)
Overall, decent game from Peyper, set a high benchmark

Yes thought peyper was very good, impressed with decision
making. Very impressed with France in second half as well,
thought NZ would kick on but we’re very poor

Interesting comments. Sadly missed the game but on the BBC have
your say site there are some damning critics of Peyper such as
inconsistent, fussy, clueless, no feel for the occasion, all
about him etc.
By the same token some views completely opposite and very much
in keeping with those on here, full of praise for him

I thought it was his most "fuss-less" game I had seen in a
while, as we all know he can definitely over whistle a match
into obscurity.
A good litmus test for me is the opinion of Ben Kay, who was
commentating and mentioned how "excellent" JP had been and hoped
it was the "standard" others would reach

I'm trying to work out how the yellow card to Tom Curry has been
upgraded to a red card

10’mins in and already 2 yellows. Ref and TMO and busy already.
Edit- curry sent off. My knowledge of the rules of rugby union
are not as good as most, but i totally disagree with that a as
red. Looks like a total natural collision head on head, he
hasn’t head butted him!

And now they've decided the Argentina one is a yellow when that
was much worse

I saw a lot less mitigation for carreras challenge than for
curry’s, to me Carreras was a lot more reckless and dangerous
going for fords head. I’d love to know how the TMO decided
Curry’s was worse.

I thought both were yellows. Tom Curry is the instigator as he
is in the landing zone- half time analysis suggests he has clear
line of sight so no mitigation.
If Curry's incident had not happened no-one would expect more
than YC for Arg10, attempted charge down, turned so contact was
with his body.
Other than those, which ultimately aren't Raynal's decisions I
think the French man has done well.

Eng v Arg
Backs to the walls 80 mins for England, defensively very good,
relied on penalties and drop goals to keep the scoreboard moving
(where have we seen this before?)
Argentina were very poor, created very little, didn't seem to
want to keep the ball and their ill discipline meant they were
whistled out of the game.
Raynal was consistent, if a little picky. Hard to shine in that
type of game. Easily good enough
