       Assault on referee in Merseyside

The BBC NW News this evening showed film of a referee being
assaulted by a parent after an Under 7 game (yes, Under 7) was
abandoned on Merseyside. The parent was later fined in Court and
banned by the FA from all football for five years. However, this
was reduced by the FA on appeal so that the parent could attend
matches as a spectator. Comments, including those from Martin
Cassidy of Ref Support were, perhaps understandably scathing
       about the FA.

Another season, same old ridiculous decisions from the FA. Why
is it even a hard decision - haven’t seen the clip but if
someone has caused an u7 game to be abandoned by assaulting the
referee (to the point he’s been fined in court)…I think it’s
fair to ban him for a significant length of time. Just don’t
understand why the FA baulk at taking the correct, firm action -
why is it so hard?? As usual, the ‘respect’ talk is just that:
posters, emails, armbands, handshakes, social media clips, but
       no meaningful substance!

I hope the referee engages a good solicitor and sues the
       assailant vigorously.

This incident is compounded by the fact the victim of the
assault was a senior referee who had offered moral support to
the young referee who had been subject to verbal abuse by the
assailant. The assault occurred afterwards, whilst the victim
was talking in a group and the assailant spotted him stopped his
car and got out to commit the offence. I think the original 5
       year ban was lenient

Exceedingly lenient. I am left wondering whether the assailant
       has contacts in the FA

On Sat morning BBC, FA gave a politician’s statement (general,
vacuous waffle about refs being important and having a hard job,
etc) rather than explain the decision.
There was some comment about it being impossible to ‘ban’
parents / spectators from public spaces. If there is a tension
with the law, then the FA should be pushing for some kind of
change. A number of games, however, are on private property
(sports clubs, schools, football clubs),so I’m not sure that
       excuse holds water.
Also, the official decision talked about the sanction being
‘excessive’… Would love to know who was on that panel!!

There is no need to ban parents / spectators from public spaces.
If they are suspended from attending football matches but still
turn up to one in a public space, the game doesn't start. Then
the other parents / spectators can police it.
