Following a very public rebuke which is weak refereeing. If you
tell a player very publicly “no more” then don’t carry it out
       you’re not doing it right.
The TAA yellow would never have happened if the referee had
punished the push in the back that sent TAA sprawling.
       [/quote]
Totally agree with you. However, I think we have to somewhat
remove the link between a decision being correct and the players
reaction. TAA has to take responsibility ultimately for his
yellow card. Surely part of a professional players duties is to
keep their head and behave appropriately - not petulantly
throwing the ball away, for which they know they will be
       cautioned.
Saying that though, I do agree it was avoidable and that the
bedrock for respect towards officials has to be correct calls.
We can't lose sight of that in the pursuit of better player
behavior. But bad behavior should never be ignored regardless of
the circumstances. In my view at least!!

I think you have hit the nail on the head with the second part
your statement. I now work in journalism/media and know for a
fact that respect for officials among coaches/managers/players
etc is at an all time low. Players will slowly improve their
behaviour because of the new strict rules, because they don't
want to constantly receive yellow & red cards. But I can tell
you for a fact, there is very little actual respect & engagement
with officials among players & clubs. Currently, there is very
little trust in officials to consistently make correct decisions
       - hence a lack of respect. Behaviour will improve because the
new rules mean it has to - not because players & managers
actually respect those officiating their games.

And my experience with journalists leaves me with very little
respect for their veracity. Their job is to sell papers.

An inconsistent refereeing performance. Ignored two Newcastle
players kick the ball away and ignored Gordon waving the
imaginary card at him. Also, he warned Joelinton about fouling,
he then made 3 in 5 mins and still no yellow.

I would argue that respect between public, senior figures and
journalists is non-existent primarily because most journalists
now are not interested in the truth. So take what they say with
       a pinch of salt
Yes there’s some poor referees, but equally there are some poor
players as well who make far more mistakes than referees during
       a game

       As Dublinref says....
Saying that though, I do agree it was avoidable and that the
bedrock for respect towards officials has to be correct calls.
We can't lose sight of that in the pursuit of better player
behavior. But bad behavior should never be ignored regardless of
       the circumstances....
One thing I have noticed is some referees also appear to be
struggling with where the line is between querying why a
decision has/hasn't been made and actual dissent, and to me seem
to be hiding behind the new directives as a reason to whip out a
yellow card ASAP rather than actually engage with players and
explain their decision. Obviously I am not talking about players
ranting and raving and openly showing dissent or running towards
       a referee etc.
IMO if more referees engaged with players (or were allowed to
engage with players more?) this results in a 'better managed'
game, which is surely what we all want?
I do also wonder how players feel when they are cautioned for
questioning a decision which is later shown to be clearly wrong?
Obviously players should not show dissent but it must be very
difficult to literally stand there and accept an incorrect
       decision.
When I was refereeing (at a very low level) if a large number of
players were questioning a decision, as correct as I felt it was
when I made it, it did give me some element of doubt whether it
was correct. I can only imagine that feeling multiplied if you
are then being, for arguments sake, booed by 50,000+ spectators
       too!

This was the strangest thing that happened all game, no yellow
card for Gordon kicking it away, but Brooks allowed Liverpool to
take the freekick not only from where Gordon kicked it to, but
while the ball was clearly still moving. He must have thought a
Liverpool player kicked it not Gordon.

I remember Vardy getting an extra game ban after being sent off
for Leicester V West Ham in the title run-in in 2016, so guess
Van Djik might end up with a 2 game suspension?

Klipperty Klopp was very restrained throughout the whole match…
Perhaps he is learning to curb his emotions, unlike Marco Silva
who already has a touchline ban in place after just three games!
