The rugby officials have always used first names or nick names
in their communication, this has not adversely affected their
decision making
(Barnsey rather than Wayne etc)

Elements of coporate comms could be beneficial, especially with
MCS.

Did anyone see Dean's comments on Soccer Saturday about this?
He basically said he thought it had been blown out of
proportion. It had not been pre-meditated and he acknowledged he
should have intervened. He also admitted he hadn't been the best
VAR and had tried to get out of the role as quickly as he could.
He said he hadn't especially socialised with Taylor and he
wished he'd used the word 'colleague' rather than 'mate/friend'.
I think Dean felt his comments were poorly worded and didn't
quite reflect what had actually happened and what he was trying
to say.

So why didn’t he say what he meant in the first place, would
have avoided all this nonsense

Well I'm sure Dean wishes he could go back and do that, but then
I guess you might as well say 'Why didn't he just intervene for
the red card in the first place?' Life is not always so easy!
As I said on Friday, I think we need to view it in the context
that Dean is relatively inexperienced at speaking to the media
and there is not the same opportunity when speaking in this sort
of environment to fully consider everything you are saying or to
edit it so you articulate your meaning better as there is with
say a scripted speech or a piece of written content.
As I said, I think this is one reason why the PGMO are not keen
on referees doing post-match interviews.

This is the age old problem, and the counter argument to letting
referees speak to the press after games. I know that Mike has
retired, but referees have no training in speaking in public,
they are going to say things they shouldn't.
The company I work for, and the company before that, have a
small army of "communication specialists", nothing gets
communicated without it going through them or having been signed
off by them. Had Mike Dean still worked for PGMOL there is no
way he would have been allowed to say what he did. but he
doesn't and is on his own now.

Not the KGB or the UK Government by any chance. Personally I
prefer the truth to something cobbled together by
"communications specialists" !

Absolutely, it is no longer just in politics but also now
prevalent in business. I have absolutely no doubt that the FA
and PGMOL will have such comms specialists.

The PGMOL are currently recruiting a Communications Officer to
work alongside its existing Head of Communications.
