Emirates Match Official appointments highlights
Jaco Peyper (South Africa) will be assisted in the opening match
by Karl Dickson (England) and Christophe Ridley (England) with
Tom Foley (England) as the Television Match Official.
Wayne Barnes (England) set to take part in a record fifth Rugby
World Cup with New Zealand v Uruguay on 5 October to be his 25th
match as a referee in the tournament.
Barnes has refereed 21 matches on the Rugby World Cup stage, the
other 11 officials have 24 matches between them.
The most-capped referee in test history, Barnes is one of four
officials who will referee four matches in the pool stage, the
others being compatriots Luke Pearce and Karl Dickson along with
Mathieu Raynal (France).
Four referees will make their Rugby World Cup debuts in the
middle in Andrew Brace (Ireland), Nika Amashukeli (Georgia),
Matthew Carley (England) and Karl Dickson (England).
Amashukeli, the first Georgian official in Rugby World Cup
history, will take charge of Ireland v Romania in Bordeaux on 9
September – 16 years after watching Ireland defeat Georgia at
France 2007 on television as his introduction to rugby.
Joy Neville (Ireland), the first female match official in men’s
Rugby World Cup history, will be a TMO for five matches,
starting with Italy v Namibia in Saint-Étienne on 9 September.
Nic Berry (Australia) will be in the middle for Chile’s Rugby
World Cup debut against Japan in Toulouse on 10 September.
Angus Gardner (Australia) will take charge of South Africa’s
opening match of their title defence, against Scotland in
Marseille on 10 September.
Portugal’s return after a 16-year absence against Wales in Nice
on 16 September will be Karl Dickson’s first RWC match as a
referee.
Paul Williams (New Zealand) will referee the first all-South
American match in Rugby World Cup history, Argentina v Chile in
Nantes on 30 September.
My Thoughts
Surprised Jaco gets his second opener - I did mention previously
that I thought they would break with tradition this time round
and go with a SH referee for the opener. I thought they could
have gone with Gardner. I think this says a lot to me with his
standing as behind O Keeffe & Peyper within SH officials (he may
miss out on a QF). His compensation though is the cracker
between SA & SCO.
The newbies getting at least 1 top match to officiate which
seems sensible to me.
Some nice touches by WR for Amashukeli, Barnes, Berry & Williams
(surprised though that Williams gets Chile in 2/3 appointments).
In terms of the English officials, really expected appointments
for Barnes with the biggie in group C. Matt Carley should be
over the moon with his appointments as on paper potentially
tougher appointments (including the crucial Wales v Fiji) match.
Have they compensated Luke Pearce with 4 appointments instead?
Berry, Williams & Barnes (all had issues with South Africa are
kept away- for now).
I have heard that Nic Berry & Jaco Peyper are not on the
greatest of terms and continue to be kept away form each other
(so maybe there is something in that).
Also, slightly surprised that Andy Brace gets an Aussie
appointment after being panned by the press for his performance
v NZ I believe in last years RC game. The game v Fiji will be of
huge importance to the standings.
All round, expected appointments I would say.
Can't wait!!

A good spread although I would have preferred a different SH
ref. We will need to make sure we are squeaky clean this week!!

If you allocate 1 to highest ranked in each pool through to 5 as
lowest ranked each game gets a value. Lower the aggregate score,
the more important the game is likely for progression
Of the 4 gamers:
Barnes (av 5.5), Raynal (6), Dickson (6) and Pearce (6.5)
The 3 gamers:
O'Keefe (4.33), Carley (4.33), Peyper (5.33), Amashukeli (5.67),
Brace (6), Berry (6), Gardner (7) and Williams (8.33)
Games likely to affect QF places:
Fra NZ, Eng Jap, Eng Arg, Jap Arg, Ire Sco, SA Ire, Sco SA, Wal
Aus, Aus Fij, Fij Wal
Games that could affect 3rd play finish in a group:
Ita Uru and Fij Geo (assuming no shocks)
Bring it on!

My heart sank a bit when I saw who had got the opener. In my
opinion a gamble from World Rugby to give this to Peyper but we
will see.
Otherwise a good spread of games

I think the Wal/Aus group could be very open, with neither of
the 2 Tier 1 nations at their best. Think I may look at odds of
Fiji progressing!
As mentioned elsewhere Eng vs Arg followed by Eng vs Jap are
going to be huge games for England.
Although Scotland are playing well in patches I cannot see them
beating Ireland or S Africa - but never say never
NZ vs Fra will be emotional but remember SA lost their opener 4
years ago (to NZ) but built through the tournament to win it
