"frankly average" ?? You are being far too generous. A referee
who has never impressed at any level but has been regularly
promoted regardless. It must be great to have a lot support from
the various FA Offices.

The relentless promotions have seemed very strange when you
consider many of his performances. The FIFA badge though seemed
finally to find him out and his removal from FIFA clearly
implies that the international authorities saw matters in a
clearer light and had rated him as going nowhere very fast in
the international scene. Hence his badge was given to someone
who might actually make a very decent international referee, I
speak of John Brooks.

Why was he not asked to review the penalty as on the replay you
could see that there was a Palace player directly in front of
him who obscured his view of the Arsenal "block" on the Palace
defenders? Why is it the VAR who makes the decision as to
whether there was an earlier foul or not when the referee has
clearly not seen that incident?

Although Tomiyasu can feel slightly hard done by with the 1st
yellow, Coote did warn a couple of Arsenal players in the
minutes previous so the next player to time waste was always
going to get booked so no problem with that.
With his 2nd yellow the question is it a foul? Debatable but
once he gives the FK it was always going to be a YC. It wasn't a
shirt pull though!
Correct decision in my view about the Palace penalty appeal, Eze
seems to jump in between the two Arsenal players.
Now for the negatives. Referees have made a big statement in the
first few games about booking players for the imaginary YC.Coote
just undone that with his failure to book Partey and Ødergaard.
Consistency? Books Tomiyasu for a 'shirt pull' but fails to book
Havertz for the most blatant shirt pull your see.
All in all some good but some bad for Coote tonight

Gillett, England, Scott, Salisbury and Harrington are all
available and not yet had games in the middle (assuming Tierney
and Kavanagh are injured). I know some aren't consistent, but
it's worth a shot, and Gillett (at the very least) is, for me,
in the top 10 performance wise in SG1 regularly, so should be
getting regular games.

Last season Gillett , Hooper and England were right up there
amongst those to have had an excellent season fast forward a few
months and now the appointments are becoming bizarre and similar
to the Mike Riley era , referees who had a strong season are
out of favour so far
As a previous poster commented Webb is starting to look a fool
but in my eyes this is because he is doing to much in so little
time and trying to please clubs , fans and media in one big go
and neglecting the bigger cog in the wheel which is the standard
of officiating by his SG1 troops

I agree , personally I think the standard of refereeing this
season by the SG1 has been low , the only standouts for the
right reasons are Brooks and Jones , sadly the rest just haven’t
hit the ground running yet

Oliver was his usual excellent self in the spurs - man United
game. I think it was a penalty for United for handball against
the spurs defender but that was the only mistake

I personally think he should of cautioned Havertz for pretending
he was going to take the throw and then giving the ball for
someone else to take,he wasted most of the time

Interesting that the general opinion of the pundits, and Dermot,
was that no penalty was correct, or at least supportable. I
think in Europe, a penalty would be expected. Whether Oliver
had a good view of the incident wasn't clear from the still
picture I saw but I suspect VAR wasn't going to intervene,
whether or not a penalty was awarded.
Just 1 other comment on that game and the non-penalty of how
stupid players can be. Fernandes, as captain, expressed his
opinion to Oliver who patiently explained presumably why a
penalty wasn't awarded. Considering it was Fernandes, it looked
to be a reasonably polite exchange, but as Oliver walked away,
Fernandes evidently made a remark behind his back with the
inevitable result. When will they ever learn, as the song went?
