It’s not an excuse, it’s a rank bad decision from Coote and team
which shouldn’t have happened. I was referring to Tomiyasu who
might reflect that cheap and wholly unnecessary yellow cards
always put you at risk from a howler from an official. It

Even the first yellow was wrong, in my opinion.
"Referees must caution players who delay the restart of play by:
appearing to take a throw-in but suddenly leaving it to a
team-mate to take"
Havertz had the ball for twice as long as Tomiyasu. Several
throw-ins took longer than the 7 or 8 seconds Tomiyasu took to
take his.
It's a nonsense to not let VAR advise on an erroneous red card,
whether from a second yellow or straight red.

Tomiyasu can thank Havertz for his first caution, I agree that
he didn't take a long time in taking it, but Havertz grabbed the
ball and held it before moving away. Added to this Coote had
just very publicly warned Arsenal for taking too long on a goal
kick, it almost became a bit of a team caution.
The second one is a bit soft, but once he gives the free kick it
can only be a caution. Totally agree on consistency in that he
didn't caution Havertz almost immediately after for a blatant
shirt hold, but we need to remember that the offence isn't shirt
holding, it is stopping a promising attack. For the earlier one
where Ayew held an opponent back, I'm not sure it stopped a
promising attack as the attacker was heading straight into
opponents.

A pretty average performance from a quite frankly average
referee. IMO both yellows were harsh considering how the game
went, the 2nd yellow for me isn’t even a foul let alone a yellow
card. Only thing he got right was the pen for arsenal.
A lot of bemusing decisions and total lack of consistency
throughout

What happened at the end of the game? My information was that an
Arsenal player was booked in the 7 minutes of added time for
kicking the ball away and yet the whistle went dead on 97.00
without any additional time being added for this timewasting.
Apparently Ramsdale also had the ball in his hands from around
96.40 for well over 6 seconds before kicking it at which point
Coote blew for full time?

"frankly average" ?? You are being far too generous. A referee
who has never impressed at any level but has been regularly
promoted regardless. It must be great to have a lot support from
the various FA Offices.

To open the discussion up slightly… Howard Webb has a big
problem to resolve in his first few weeks in situe.
Hooper, Coote, Salisbury, Bramall and Bond have produced sub
standard offerings this season thus far, and given that Hooper
and Salisbury were banished out of the second round of
appointments… where does Webb go now?

I agree , personally I think the standard of refereeing this
season by the SG1 has been low , the only standouts for the
right reasons are Brooks and Jones , sadly the rest just haven’t
hit the ground running yet

In a bid to defend the dreadful Coote, you seem to have almost
introduced a new concept - the team caution. Can't find anything
in the Laws to justify this.

Tbh I think Webb has scored an own goal by trying to be so
"public" with what he is doing. I understand he wants to help
people's understanding of how decisions are reached and try to
add a level of transparency and has given lots of public
interviews in papers & on TV and has issued public apologies to
clubs where he feels it is necessary.
His problem is that the SG1 officials are currently so
inconsistent at best (completely sub-standard at worst) that to
the general public & football community he is actually starting
to look like a bit of a fool. On a regular basis we have
interviews about what they are trying to do and he spends time
trying to "educate" fans, media etc on how the rules work/are
applied - but at the same time he is making almost weekly
apologies because the officials cannot back up his words with
their performances on the pitch. At some stage the whole thing
just becomes a bit farcical and he will look completely foolish
(if we aren't there already).
I do like Howard Webb and I think greater media exposure in the
longer term would be a good thing - but his absolute number one
priority, bar none, is to improve the standard of officiating.
We are coming up shortly to a year in charge for Webb and he and
his team have also had a full pre season in a multi million
pound facility with the all fitness, technology, training and
analysis you could think of - and early indications show there
has been no improvement whatsoever.
